I disagree in general with what you're saying about todays nba vs the nba of the 90's.Originally posted by Raketemensch View PostSo I was killing time the other day and ran across some old vids of the Jazz in the playoffs in the 90s. Good stuff but bittersweet. Watching some of those reminds me of why I used to love the NBA. The players gave a damn. The game was physical.
YouTube - Utah Jazz vs Houston Rockets 1997 (Game 6 West Conf Finals)
Karl Malone and Charles Barkley jawing back and forth. The mailman swinging elbows. Stockton dropping f-bombs and giving it all he had. Man I miss those days.

Here you have Ostertag losing it, Jerry freaking out (he really did lose his edge over the years, man he used to be a ball of rage) good entertainment.
The NBA has evolved into a much different league. No defense, no physical play, no personality. Casual basketball. I miss the NBA I grew up with.I'm like LeBron James.

There's a lot more flopping now. But have a look at anyone playing defense against Dwight Howard and tell me its not physical.Originally posted by Raketemensch View PostIt will be intense. Perhaps what has changed for the worse is that my team will be nowhere near it.
I would say though that style of play has changed a great deal- game just isn't as physical as it used to be. I think that's hard to argue against.

I don't watch the NBA these days, but remember that even in the 90s I didn't like it as much because of the lack of effort, defense, and teamwork. Perhaps things have gotten worse, but I've perceived those things as problems for a long time.Originally posted by Raketemensch View PostSo I was killing time the other day and ran across some old vids of the Jazz in the playoffs in the 90s. People who share this opinion must have really hated Jimmer.Originally posted by woot View PostI don't watch the NBA these days, but remember that even in the 90s I didn't like it as much because of the lack of effort, defense, and teamwork. It was probably more physical, but it was more like a jungle ball type of physical. The quality of basketball was poor, IMO. That said, these types of discussions never fail to amuse me however, because our opinions are completely clouded by biased memories.Originally posted by Raketemensch View PostIt will be intense. For example, I watch 80s basketball and I see a bunch of guys who didn't play a lick of defense allowing guys like Purvis Short and Kiki Vandewhe to be dominant scorers - guys who would struggle to put up 17-19 ppg in today's (or even the 90s) NBA. The Pistons showed you could win with defense, the Bulls followed suit and soon everybody was playing defense. You talk to my neighbor, he might say they've never played better defense than they did in the 80s.I'm like LeBron James.

Phew! At least Derrick Williams is not returning to school.
And a win tonight for Washington vs Cavs ties Jazz for 4th in the lottery (assuming NJ loses.
And for something completely pointless. I tried Fordss Mock draft today, and in only one attempt, the Jazz ended up with the 2nd pick, from their own odds. So they had both the 2nd and 6th picks.

I tried exactly 100 times yesterday, and couldn't get the Jazz to move up with their own pick. I did land them at #1 three times with NJ's pick, though.Originally posted by Jacob View PostPhew! At least Derrick Williams is not returning to school.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock
