Trump promised this in 2015, repeatedly in 2016 during the main campaign, and had four years of his presidency to attempt it but never did anything about it. Although Trump cares nothing about the constitution and is definitely an aspiring dictator, I think on this particular topic it's basically theater to the MAGAs.

I am very concerned about DeSantis' politics. However, I don't think he is in any danger of winning the primary against a defeated, soon-to-be-convicted-of-multiple-felonies ex-president, which tells you a lot about how poor of a candidate DeSantis really is.
