You sure skewered me with this, I don't think I will ever recover.Originally posted by BemidjiCougThis is so true I would gladly take college diploma and executive career and trade it for your GED and leisure time checking out the local youth baseball prospects if I could only be as talented as sculpting posts as you are."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

I'm done with this. You are prob a nice guy. I get that its funny to say that thinking is not my forte. My posts may sometimes be stupid I really don't take what I write on here that seriously. Maybe that's where there is a disconnect.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostDamn, mom always said I wouldn't amount to anything. The GED didn't prove her wrong?

I think seeing Riley have patience in the pocket and complete some passes will end up being beneficial for Jake. He needs to look at the way Riley used misdirection to his advantage, leading the defense to one place with his eyes and/or movement before quickly changing course and delivering the ball. Heaps has not been looking off the safeties."I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

One thing I hoped Jake learned from Riley last night is that the easiest throws are the most important.Originally posted by Pelado View PostI think seeing Riley have patience in the pocket and complete some passes will end up being beneficial for Jake. I'm going to say this again: in college, arm strength is overrated. Yes, Riley will never be a pro QB, but neither would a lot of our best QB's--Detmer, Doman, even Hall. With a healthy Wynn, Utah would be just fine, and I would honestly take Riley's arm over Wynn's (NOT saying Riley is a better QB, just to nip that one in the bud). UCF should have beaten us with a bad throwing QB (worse than Riley), Utah brutalized us with one, and Utah State easily could have beaten us with one (unlike some on here, I'm not going as far as "should have"). I just can't get off on watching beautiful passes that don't hit targets. I'd rather win games.
Like Wynn, Riley is a million times smarter on the field than Heaps, and in college, that goes a long way. His arm isn't nearly as bad as some on here are saying. I still hold out hope that Heaps will get it, just like Beck eventually did, but he's not there yet. He'll get his chance again when Riley gets hurt, but for the moment, I'm on with Riley. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

And tougher - I think in the Riley/Jake situation, toughness is a huge part of it. I could be wrong, but it sure seems like Nelson is throwing to more open receivers than Heaps. And I'm convinced it's because he's being more patient, more willing to hold the ball long enough for guys to get open. There were a couple times last night he held the ball and just after he got rid of it, he got drilled. Heaps seems to do everything he can - read: throw the ball too soon - to avoid getting hit. All Riley Nelson does is go out there, allow himself to get hit in the pocket, get back up, run a QB draw on the next play while breaking 2-3 tackles and getting hammered at the end of the play.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostLike Wynn, Riley is a million times smarter on the field than Heaps, and in college, that goes a long way. In a post yesterday, Grace mentioned that he could have easily had 4 picks - true, but he also had two potential big plays dropped where he put the ball right where it needed to be. I think with more reps in games and in practice, the INTs can be fixed to an extent. We'll see - maybe I'm too optimistic now being able to watch a guy who's willing to compete - but I think BYU can be pretty good with Nelson at QB.I'm like LeBron James.

Some of this could be coaching too. I've watched practices where there has been a coach counting seconds and yelling at the QB if he doesn't get the pass if in a certain amount. THAT'S TOO SLOW YOU'D BE SACKED IN A GAME.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostAnd tougher - I think in the Riley/Jake situation, toughness is a huge part of it. Yeah, maybe smarter isn't the right word. More willing to buy time and improvise. Think outside the 1st option, or even the second or third reads. He's a little like Darnell Arceneaux (credit Solon with that one)--he gives you much bigger fits than he ever really should.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostAnd tougher - I think in the Riley/Jake situation, toughness is a huge part of it.
