Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

          • I guess Riley apologized on channel 13 tonight for his long hair. There is no way in hades you can't start him now. The kid would make a great lawyer and eventually GA.

He did a great job Friday nite just in case anyone thinks I was being sarcastic.

So what's going on with the hair? I assume he got it cut. I've been there with the HCO.

Should have kept his helmet on.

EDIT: I looked at the other thread, so no need to answer.

              • Just listened to this

                http://1320kfan.com/index.php/audio/...ce_jake_heaps1

He said he was surprised he got benched against Utah State.

                He sounds depressed.

Nothing from this interview makes me think he's going to bounce back strong.

One day at a time, Jake. It is what it is.

I didn't get that from that clip. He basically spouted all the cliches. What did you want him to say to those questions?

The most telling portion of the interview is when he is asked what he needs to improve. He couldn't think of anything for a bit. The pause was glaring. Also, he is diplomatically asked if he sees things in "other QBs" games that he could adopt...meaning do you think you can run with the ball, and create a little more? Jake shot that down quickly, too.

                      Nelson will start the weekend.

He and Doman aren't going to be buddies. I am not sure Doman is going to end up being a good OC.'

You might be right about red shirting, but if you are it won't be at BYU. He is already is married so he has had the BYU experience.
Heaps would most likely do better in a run and shoot system. I think he would be a good fit at SMU with June Jones. All the reads are made for him, so he can get rid of the ball fast and most importantly, not get hit (In the list of priorities for Heaps not getting hit is always at the top of the list).

You're forgetting about my advanced ability to discern hidden meaning in radio interviews. My gut feel on this relates to the pauses and the tone, as you mention. Also that he was totally blind sided by being benched.

I interpreted his comments as: "they shouldn't have benched me and now that they have I think I'll go home and cry and kick my dog but outside of that I have no idea what to do."

                          • It's amazing what some people can read into a "pause." First off, there wasn't a pause that I could tell. He filled the time with filler words, much as great orators like our president does. Secondly, his response to the question was a perfect response form my perspective. He mentioned each of the things that he does need to improve on. I'm not sure what more we could ask for as a response to that question.

Heaps has probably been told how great he is his entire life. It sounds like he may be oblivious to how bad he's played -- and he's played really, really poorly.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but when all is said and done I think we're going to discover that the problem isn't so much Doman, his playcalling or BYU's receivers, the problem is Heaps. When I posted about the numbers of other 3-4 year starters, it appears unfair to cite to guys like Colt McCoy, Tebow and Detmer. But I also cited Chris Leak, who wasn't the most beloved QB at UF but redeemed himself at the end by winning a title. The fact is there aren't very many 3-4 year starters that aren't pretty successful, otherwise they would have been yanked long before they started a 4th, 3rd or 2nd year.

Heaps can still pull this off, but I'm not optimistic.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
