Yes the 16 team WAC failed . This however was a different time and there are different items at play. Here are some considerations:

    1. The schools that could be added to make a 16 team MWC are a lot better than in 1996. These schools are:

    Kansas
    Kansas St
    Iowa St
    Baylor
    Boise St
    Houston
    Fresno St.

Additionally these schools are looking for a home.

    2. With the above mentioned schools that have a lot of alumni should be enough to get the mtn on basic cable in these metro areas, St Louis, Houston, Dallas and Fresno (I would say Boise but I believe they already have the mtn on basic cable). This means that mtn can get 70 cent a subscriber for a lot more homes then 15 cents subscriber to whoever has the sports package. The mtn isn't going to make big10 money by any stretch of the imagination but if they could do 50% since they were in some large markets? B10 Network got 240 million in Revenue for 2009.

    • Which teams add more to the equation?

      BYU/Utah
      or
      Ok St/Texas Tech

They seem pretty equivalent to me. The one exception is BYU's non-public status.

Would those 2 teams be for political reasons?

      • I love the P16 idea, would be a total homerun.

        • I've asked this before (in this thread even) but what happens to the post-season BCS picture if you have 3, maybe 4 16 team super leagues? Does each conference get two teams (e.g. division winners) in a BCS game, making it more like 6 BCS leagues like they already have?

I can't imagine any sort of consolidation unless there is a consolidation of power, or at least a maintaining of the status quo.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

          • Wow!!

Not a bad idea, really. The two divisions make sense.

May Texas and Oregon meet in the first title game.

If you are going to 16 you might as well go to 18 then each team gets 4 home and 4 away games. Works well with basketball too. In this case Pac-10 is one divison except for U of Arizona goes with the other schools.

                      • If the P10, SEC, and B10 all go to 16 teams I could see the BCS bids breaking down as follows. The "Big 3" Conferences get two auto bids each, and then a MWC/WAC/Big 12 leftovers conference get one auto bid and a weakened ACC/Big East combo conference get one auto bid also. The latter two conferences would have only 12 teams.

                        • Couple of quotes from Ted Miller:

                          Mark (Salt Lake)

Do you see religious bias as a motivation for BYU not being considered in PAC-10 expansion talk?

                          Ted Miller

                          Yes. That's part of it.

                          Christian Childress (Dallas, TX)

Rivals just let out story stating Pac 10 is set to invite OU, OSU, TTU, UT, CU and A&M all to Pac 10 creating a 16 team conference with 8 in each division. Have you heard anything on this?

                          Ted Miller

no....and I don't think that's going to happen. As I wrote early: Larry Scott told me today that no major news would come out of the meetings this weekend. Sounds like someone was just speculating.

I like how he doesn't include BYU when forming his conference of Big 12 leftovers.
