Utes were rightfully excited about the trajectory of their football program the last 20 years. But I think something Utah and BYU fanbases both have in common is an inflated sense of their own value and place in the world of college sports. And somehow, Utah fans eclipsed BYU in this way. And by eclipsed, I mean, overtook, and then lapped BYU fans several times.

So when BYU has a fortunate flag late in a game, but is then able to drive 55 yards on three plays in less than :30 of game time, and set itself up for a game-winning field goal, the Ute psyche cannot accept that their team was bested by the clearly better team (by any objective measurement). It has to be the refs fault. It has to be dirty play. It can't be because their QB play was horrific 3/4 of the game. It can't be that their O-Line crumbled in the second half. It can't be that their CB held a receiver (unnecessarily, I'll add). No, the only way BYU could be undefeated and trending upwards in the revenue sports is a grand conspiracy against Utah.

So, sit back and enjoy those sour grapes. Shit on the conference that threw you a lifeline, even after your fans, football coaches, and AD essentially proclaimed 1. they were too good for the conference, 2. that they're a national brand headed for B10, and 3. that they'd own the conference from day 1.

Maybe it's just a down year for Utah football. Or maybe, just maybe, the P12 (in spite of its amazing venues...Tucson, Tempe, Salt Lake, Pullman, Corvallis included) was not nearly as good or as prestigious as the Ute collective psyche believed.

My analysis is that many uofutah fans are where BYU fans were in the early to mid 90s when the glory years that started in the 70s and dominated the 80s finally came to a close. I remember those years well. I went into every game expecting BYU to not only win, but to dominate. Losing, while it happened on occasion, was never a realistic expectation. Then the great humbling came, Utah and others ascended, the bibs, Crouton, Feterick et al, Utah goes to the PAC, and BYU goes independent. Those were tough years. While BYU fans can indeed be insufferable, I would like to think that many of us can also bring some perspective to the awesomeness that this season has become. Many uofutah fans have only seen awesomeness and ascension. I still find it hilarious that the acme of the great ascension has been two straight losses in Rose Bowls, the last one a blow out to PSU.

    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

      • Yes! Please start the petition. Can you imagine how many B12 teams would sign it?
