        And hooray for Utah:

Updated study says 25% of NYC residents were infected. Hopefully infections confer immunity and it lasts into next season as that would significantly blunt a possible second wave for NY.

I’ll bet some of those counties are really unhappy with the colors that have been chosen to represent them.

Man, I'm sick of the nutjob conspiracy theory types. Now the loonies are running around claiming some poor women is "patient zero" even though she has never tested positive for the virus.

And of course the Chinese state media is jumping on those loony claims and pimping them all over China.

The WHO also said there was no human to human transmission until the end of January and said it would be contained in China in mid February so we really don't have anything to worry about.

Epidemiology is a science of possibilities and persuasion, not of certainties or hard proof. “Being approximately right most of the time is better than being precisely right occasionally,” the Scottish epidemiologist John Cowden wrote, in 2010. “You can only be sure when to act in retrospect.” Epidemiologists must persuade people to upend their lives—to forgo travel and socializing, to submit themselves to blood draws and immunization shots—even when there’s scant evidence that they’re directly at risk.

Epidemiologists also must learn how to maintain their persuasiveness even as their advice shifts. The recommendations that public-health professionals make at the beginning of an emergency—there’s no need to wear masks; children can’t become seriously ill—often change as hypotheses are disproved, new experiments occur, and a virus mutates.

                        COVID-19 SURGE UPDATE

Due to the effectiveness of social distancing, catastrophic patient surge is not expected; statewide ICU/medical bed and ventilator demand should not exceed supply.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19+ patients will likely continue to rise until mid-May due to lag time between infection and symptom development.

Secondary surge is expected, possibly in the late summer-fall timeframe (greatly depends on compliance with social distancing).

Secondary surges can be more severe than the initial surge. Therefore, the state and health systems are continuing with surge planning and provider/staff retraining/reassignment.

Testing capacity continues to improve. TriCore is now processing approximately 2,700 tests/day, which is >50% of the entire state’s total testing capacity (thank you, TriCore!).

In conjunction with the state Medical Advisory Team, state officials are drafting a re-opening plan that includes resumption of elective procedures/surgeries. Dates and details are not yet available.

More on viral load. Density of population increases the death rate as well as spread.

We Know Crowding Affects the Spread. It May Affect the Death Rate.
                            https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/27/o...e=articleShare

Large, densely populated cities are going to need a more cautious plan. This is not just because more crowded areas increase the risk of spread, but also because we’re learning that crowding itself may also affect the death rate. A relationship between the amount of virus to which one is initially exposed and the severity of the illness is found in most infectious diseases.

                              WTF?
These people are weird. Here's the justification for the SIP order

Breed warned that during the 1918 Spanish flu, people took off their masks and resumed normal life too early. It resulted in an even worse resurgence of the virus in the fall and winter.
So they should SIP until the end of May to reduce the chance of an outbreak in the fall and winter? Texas is lifting its SIP order but I still have to wear a mask in public. People can go about their daily lives fairly normally and still be socially distant. There's a huge difference between SIP and social distancing at least in terms of impact on the economy...however they aren't so different in the impact on the spread of the virus.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
