  • Live updates: White House asks everyone who left coronavirus-stricken N.Y.C. area recently to self-quarantine for 14 days

The White House coronavirus task force, citing concern about the high infection rate in the New York City area, is asking everyone who has left that area recently to self-isolate for 14 days, wherever they are.

    . . . . . . . .

President Trump said Tuesday that he wants the country “opened up” by Easter — April 12 — and continued to play down the dangers of the coronavirus pandemic even as experts warned of a worsening crisis.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

    • How (un)popular is Donald Trump?

An updating calculation of the president's approval rating, accounting for each poll's quality, recency, sample size and partisan lean.

      • I recognize the importance of encouraging public optimism ("We can do this!"), but Trump takes it way too far, saying stuff like, "You'll have packed churches [Easter Sunday (in just two weeks!) all over our country. I think it'll be a beautiful time." I don't think there's a health official in the land who thinks this is a good idea, but Trump is desperate to have the economy not tank.

I don't think Trump's motivation here is simply political. His personal wealth is tied to an industry that will be hurt more than most by a prolonged shutdown. And Trump properties, probably more than most I'd assume, are highly leveraged as he's always been very aggressive with debt financing, which is why mainstream lenders avoid Trump investments like they're crawling with COVID-19. It wouldn't be a surprise if an extended economic downturn resulted in a lot more Trump-related bankruptcies.

This is another reason why presidents, until Trump, put all of their assets in blind trusts so that their decision-making is less likely to be influenced by the vagaries of the market. Unfortunately for all of us, Trump is driven by them.

Yes. This is what I was alluding to in my latest post in the COVID-19 thread. We need someone responsibly crafting a strategy and rhetoric to get us to the other side as quickly as possible. But Trump is NOT that guy. And this was always the biggest danger of a Trump presidency. He was never going to turn us into fascists. Even if you disagree with his day to day policy decisions, he couldn't cripple the country like those obsessed with him think. He isn't organized or ideological enough to do that. Also, see all the stuff Obama did that was supposedly going to turn us communist that Trump undid fairly easily. No, the danger was he would be faced with a generational challenge, one that requires a steady hand and rational decision-making to get us through safely - and he would not be up to the task. Not up to it because he is too small and selfish and impulsive to be the statesman we need. So while I have never really gotten worked up by Trump to this point, this was always the fear in the back of my mind and now we are here.

Agreed, obviously. Interestingly, while negotiating the current stimulus bill, the Dems managed to revise it to preclude any loans or bailouts going to Trump-controlled businesses. With Mar-A-Lago and other U.S. Trump properties currently shuttered and workers being let go, this has got to be causing a lot of pain for the Trump. If only he was smart and/or humble enough to realize he's exacerbating his own financial woes.

            • Frankly put, this is an insane idea.

The U.S. should be leading the world on the virus. Instead, it’s missing in action.

The United States should immediately convene the Group of Seven, followed by an expanded online gathering of the Group of 20, to develop a joint strategy addressing the challenges now faced by governments and individuals in almost every country on Earth. Saudi Arabia has already taken the lead on a virtual G-20 gathering; the United State should ensure it produces workable results. Together, these nations should create international teams with the highest levels of expertise to deal with the fast-growing emergencies on multiple fronts.

I wonder why it is gone.

It was more sinister than this one, but the same theme.

Maybe I'd change my mind if they could show that a life is saved because of their statement. At the same time it's humiliating that they couldn't do it because the US insists on the Wuhan Virus language. What a dipshit move to plant your flag on that point.
