  • This is the year I am no longer going to be a 100s golfer with occasional 90s. I am going to be a 90s golfer full time.

3 rounds in the last two weeks. 94, 102, and 96 yesterday. Yesterday will haunt me for a while I think. I could have shot in the high 80s but I gave away so many shots. I had two snowmen on par 4s on my way to the 96. I could see myself enjoying golf even more if I only mildly sucked at it.

    • I played today. One the par 5 first hole, I hit my approach from 80 yards out, and it lipped out. Tap in Birdie. I would have no other pars or birdies the rest of the round, and followed up the bird with double, triple, double... but I still managed to squeak out a 95.

I walked again and the front flew by (1.5 hours). On the back I was held up by a 6some in front of a 5some (who were all walking) in front of a 3some, in front of a twosome who were in front of me. The twosome finally allowed me to join them on hole 14 (i was chatting with them on the 11th tee box, but they didnt ask me to join them, so I hung back. On 14 I finally told them the wait was killing my rythm and asked if I could join them) . Before that it was a 10-12 minute wait at each tee. What should have been a 3 hour round ended up being 4.25 hours.

      • First 9 holes of the season, only played twice last year. Man I miss golf. At least that's what I was thinking after I hit a perfect drive and walked off the #1 tee.

Nine holes later, I'm not so sure I miss golf. :/

Played 6 of the 9 holes at 1 over par. The other three I played at 13 over par. With some spectacularly bad shots.

        I love/hate this game.

You were a model of consistency compared with Kevin Na's round in the Texas Open today. He set a PGA record for worst score on a par four, carding a 16 (would that be a dodecabogey? I think my worst is an octobogey), including a penalty stroke for getting hit by his own ball when it ricocheted off a tree. Amazingly, he still managed to shoot an 80.

I was going to post this. He might be my new favorite golfer. I loved watching him whiff, or hit the ball 8 feet into a tree. Unlike most pro golfers I have no idea how they feel on the course, I knew exactly how he felt on that hole.

That he shot an 80 is insane.

            • No excuses today. My back feels alright, temperature should be above 60, plenty of money on the line. If I don't break 90 today, I probably never will again.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

              • I can't golf. Some old dude stole my golf shoes last time I was out.

                • I got 16 holes into today on my extended lunch hour (I already had a patient waiting and couldn't justify 2 more holes). I was 7 over and striking the ball as well as I ever have. I'm really trying to focus on a better shoulder rotation this year; that is my only pre-shot visualization. It has added a lot of distance to all my clubs, though occasionally results in the dreaded pull-hook. I've come to the conclusion I will never be a great golfer, but I want to have a consistent swing, and not be so "whippy" with my arms.

71 and I are in a Cold War arms race, to see who can get back to shooting in the 70s consistently. The smart money is on the one who remembers a young Byron Nelson.

Well, I threw down a 89 today. I could be on by way back. 6 pars and only 1 out 5 chips that was a shank.

Oh by the way, anyone want to joing a cool Country Club in Davis Country. I guess they are giving a finders fee. I guess CC membership accross the nation has dropped on average 10%.

We are only down 5% which is pretty good. I guess though we will have to have a $400 to $500 accessment if we dont pick up 10 new members over the next month or so. They have a pretty cool corporate membership deal. You don't have to tell people you know me.

I have heard that jerk has the shoes in his office. I would go up there and make a scene. The old fart will probably give you the shoes and offer to take you out to Oakridge sometime on him.

OK, so I wasn't back. However, on the range after I think I have stumbled onto the problem. Hands held to low. I do have a lesson this week. The guy is great I hear. He doesn't change your whole swing but just a couple of things.

Better weather this week, hands held higher, lesson. Don't be surprised if I report a low 80's round.

I'll be visiting that office to grab the shoes this week. I'm going to try and get some lessons in to try and make this year less embarrassing than the last.

Sounds great. Call ahead if you can. If the weather gets nice, I will be scheduling client appointments outside the office. I will tell my SA where I have hidden them if you happen to show up when I am out.

                            • I shot an 84 at Badlands on Friday, which included a triple and two doubles. My driver was all over the place. I probably only hit 3 or 4 fairways, total. On the bright side, my short irons were solid, and my putter was on fire. I made at least 8 putts of 12 feet or longer, including a couple bombs. In my entire life, I've never felt so confident with the putter in my hands. 6-footers felt like gimmes when I stood over them.

                              • Unsolicited golf advice is an interesting thing. I don't mind it from someone who I perceive as a better stick than I am, or who has some course knowledge that would benefit me. I also, don't mind if the person is a friend or someone I know. However, i hate tips from a random dude I've been paired with who is throwing up snowmen every other hole. So take this for what its worth, something that I've found helpful.

Long story short, I am rereading the best golf book I've ever found. It is fantastic for anyone who struggles with their short game. I have to re-read the pitching/chipping sections every year, because I inevitably revert back to old habits. Pelz, is literally a rocket-scientist - he use to work for NASA. This book might be a little too engineery for some, but I find him very easy to read and love the scientific approach he takes toward the game. Personally, the 4 or 5 pages on where the ball should be placed in the stance for each type of shot is worth the price alone (interestingly, I've heard teaching pros tell students exactly the opposite of what Pelz' data shows).
