Cheer Up! Golf is great whatever you shoot.

I turned 50 this past year and thought my best days were behind me, as I was a 5 back in the day. Funny thing, I'm playing more consistent and scoring just as well as in my hey day. Sure I don't hit 9 irons 150 anymore, but my putting and short game are still great. On my 50th birthday I shot a 39/34 and now feel that the long lost 69 is still in my game.

I'm really looking forward to this summer...

    • My last two rounds have been 81 and 86. Pretty happy with that to start the season.

      • I got out to play 18 yesterday afternoon afternoon, basking the spring sun and BYU victory. I had easily my best day ever golfing off of the tee, and that is my silver lining.

Clack thanks for the heads up. I went and hit the R9 and still preferred the Clevelands. I plan on going in for a full fitting with the CG7s then will likely pull the trigger on the full set. I also want to upgrade my driver, but want to wait a month or so until I'm (hopefully) swinging better before deciding on anything. As Donut mentioned above, the prices for last years R9s are great on Ebay, that is direction I'm currently leaning.

That's good info... 'cause those Clevelands seem like they would instill a lot of confidence from their good looks.

We went to Utah last weekend, and I left my driver and 3 wood with my sons. I was expecting to buy a new combo this week, and unfortunately came home to a 5K set back. I'm going to have to play with some old discarded junk for a couple of weeks. I'm 95% sure that the R9's are going to be in my bag for the next couple of years.

I was in Walla Walla two weeks ago, and stopped at Wine Valley. I played two holes before heading back to Portland. It's really nice, and if you get a chance be sure to go out there and play.

            • Had a great round today...

Shot a 92 with 3 pars. No triples.

              • Before I take the plunge and drop a few hundred on a new driver, I decided to go to GolfSmith and get "fitted" to a new driver.

Being fitted means that they use a high speed camera and computer to measure swing speed launch angle and most importantly, the side spin and back spin.

I had determined in my head that a TaylorMade R9 would be my next club, but upon analysis the R9 came in 4th out of 7 clubs as far as consistency goes.

For me - by far - the best/most consistent club was the Callaway FT Tour 9.5 with the Voodoo, 65 gram, stiff. It was really interesting that right away I could tell that this club superior than the others. The NIKE also felt good, but swing after swing the Callaway FT Tour felt like heaven, and the results showed on the computer. My swing speed came in around 97 (last check it was 104 avg.) When I swung hard, I could take it to 107, but on a good solid swing I had a 97 with distance between 255-270. My distance off center with the Callaway was a surprisingly good 12 feet average. With the best news of all is that I'm capable of putting together a string of consistent swings that would serve well for a low scoring round.

If you buy a club the fitting is free - but otherwise it cost me $20 for the technical information which changed my perception of what is what according to my particular golf swing. Money well spent.

Now... is it the Voodoo shaft, the head, or the combo that makes it good. I'll report later on what I'll actually do.

                • I played my second round of the year, and my first with my own clubs today. I was really struggling with keeping my drives in the fairways, though most misses were in the first cut, and my wedges from 100-75 yards (usually the strong point of my game), but putted consistently all day long. It was freezing to start the day (I will blame my bogey streak to start with on frozen hands), so I clubbed up 1 club all day long. It would be nice to shoot in the 70's again, hopefully this will be the start to a good season.

Did you buy the Clevelands, and played with them?

I ordered the Clevelands but won't have them until next week. I was playing with my old Ping I3s.

                          Nice round, congrats.

I shot 81 today with two doubles and a triple. Given how I have been struggling lately, as I walked off 18 I started shedding some tears of joy.

                              • Played okay until the last three holes...

2 rounds in a row though under 100.

I had 3 pars on the front 9. Never had 3 in a round, let alone 3 on a side before.

                                Back nine. Sheesh.
