I shot mid 80's both days with a twelve also. I'm a good best ball partner right now because I can still string together some pars and roll in the occasional birdie but I can't keep it together all round. If I limited myself to biking or golf I think I could be fair at either one but by doing them both I've just resigned myself to being mediocre at both.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostShooting even with a 12 handicap,? Not sure if this is real, but I thought it was interesting:
You think you are a tough weather golfer.
This notice posted in war-torn Britain in 1940 for golfers with stiff upper lips. You have to admit --- these guys really had guts!
German aircraft from Norway would fly on missions to northern England; because of the icy weather conditions, the barrels of their guns had a small dab of wax to protect them. As they crossed the coast, they would clear their guns by firing a few rounds at the golf courses. Golfers were urged to take cover.
Local golf rules in England c1940
Richmond Golf Club
Temporary Rules 1940
1) Players are asked to collect Bomb and Shrapnel splinters to save these causing damage to the mowing machines
2)In competitions, during gunfire or while bombs are falling, players may take cover without penalty for ceasing play.
3) The positions of known delayed action bombs are marked by red flags at a reasonably, but not guaranteed, safe distance therefrom.
4) Shrapnel and/or bomb splinters on the Fairways, or in Bunkers within a clubs length of a ball, may be moved without penalty, and no penalty shall be incurred if a ball is thereby caused to move accidentally.
5) A ball moved by enemy action may be replaced, or if lost or destroyed, a ball may be dropped not nearer the hole without penalty.
6)A ball lying in a crater may be lifted and dropped not nearer the hole, preserving the line to the hole, without penalty.
7) A player whose stroke is affected by the simultaneous explosion of a bomb may play another ball from the same place. Penalty one stroke.
I love #7......they still assess a penalty stroke for this one!Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I felt like yesterday I was in the British Open. We tee off and it starts to rain. Then it starts to pour. We toughed it out because we were playing a 4 team scramble. After the 5th hole the weather broke and we played the back 9 in sunshine and perfect weather. Still we could shoot par as a team. We couldn't make putts at all. The rain made lots of putts slow and then by the end of the round the putts got pretty fast. It was frustrating.Originally posted by byu71 View PostTough

Got to play Eugene Country Club this afternoon, number 85 in the latest Golf Digest course rankings. Such an amazing course, I was offended when they asked me to tuck my shirt in
It was an up and down round, but finished par-par to save a score in the 90s, with a 97.Get confident, stupid

Sounds like a good time. I like that they had to ask you to tuck in your shirt. You should have taken your shirt off around hole three and really freaked them out.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostGot to play Eugene Country Club this afternoon, number 85 in the latest Golf Digest course rankings. I played the Eugene Country Club in the late 70's. Great course and very pretty or should I say very beautiful.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostGot to play Eugene Country Club this afternoon, number 85 in the latest Golf Digest course rankings. Our club requires a shirt in. I remember one day a member came up to my son with me standing there. He said, " we are happy to have you here, but tuck your shirt in." I thought, I am his Dad, why not walk up to me and remind me of the rule.
Anyway he had a short shirt on and it popped out on every swing. I made him tuck it in. However, when we crossed the road on number 11 I told him he could keep his shirt out the next 7 holes until we crossed back accross the road. While we were teeing off on 12, he came running over from 11 and started yelling at my kid he told him to keep his shirt in. I told him to shut the hell up. He then came over and started poking his finger in my chest saying "you know the rules." After knocking his arm away, I told him to never tell my kid what to do again when I was standing right there. I told him if he has a problem he can write the board a letter, but for now shut the hell up. By the way he is one of the few members in the club I could kick the crap out of.
I had to leave on 15 and told my son, my other two boys were there to, that if this guy came up again and yelled at him, he could kick the crap out him. I know, not wise. I went in to the clubhouse before leaving and told the pro what happened and if Sid came in with a broken nose, I told my kid to give it to him.
That night I get a phone call. The voice says, "this is Sid ...., I want to apologize for my abominable behavior" and hung up.
I made the mistake of telling the story to some of my friends. The story spread and whenever the guy came around someone would blurt out, when is the fight scheduled for. Highly embarassing for me and I suspect him.Last edited by byu71; 06-28-2011, 01:02 AM.

Against my (and certainly my wife's) better judgment, I'm thinking about putting together a golf tourney for Saturday, September 17, the morning of the BYU/Utah game. At Tick's request, I spoke with the pro at Wasatch and, contrary to their usual policy of no large groups on Saturday, they'll give us 48 slots for a shotgun start that morning at <gulp> 7:30. Unfortunately, they've already given a few starting times to others on the Mountain Course, so our event would be on the Lake Course. The cost would be $45, with cart.
On the plus side, the early start would certainly allow plenty of time for tailgating and such before the evening kickoff.
I went ahead and booked it, despite the early time and course (Tick really wanted the Mountain), but it can be cancelled without penalty.
Anyone have better ideas? Will you participate?

I will participate. I propose we do a regular four-man scramble format this year, and score each group with the net and gross scores. Max handicap 35, and each team uses at least one tee shot from each player.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostAgainst my (and certainly my wife's) better judgment, I'm thinking about putting together a golf tourney for Saturday, September 17, the morning of the BYU/Utah game. There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

I agree. And PAC...I am down with the Lake course also.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI will participate. DT and I were talking about handicaps...if someone doesn't have an established handicap, then don't give them anything higher than a 20. My vote would be 18, but 20 is what our mens club uses.
I think we should start a new thread though...so this one doesn't get lost.
Oh happy day. (And 730 isn't too early. Get there by 630 and start hitting a bucket.)

SWeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeT. I absolutely LOVE the Lake course. With due deference to Tick, whom I love like a cousin, the Mtn. Course is a wrinky dink course where luck is more important than skill.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostAgainst my (and certainly my wife's) better judgment, I'm thinking about putting together a golf tourney for Saturday, September 17, the morning of the BYU/Utah game. So I am definitely in. As I have always said, I prefer we play our own ball, especially if traveling that far to play a great course. However, I will be happy to play no matter what.
There is another form of a scramble that is kind of fun. On each hole one person plays his own ball and the other 3 play a scramble. Or course each person takes his turn being the lone ranger. The best two play 4 holes alone and the other two play 3 holes alone.
P.s. Maybe this should be it's own thread. A lot of people may not read the golf thread.

I also prefer to play my own ball, but I think the scramble format with the gross and net scoring does the most accurate job of leveling the playing field.Originally posted by byu71 View PostSWeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeT. You should have to use more than 1 tee shot per player. The last two 4-man scrambles I have played in you have to use at least 3 per player.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI will participate.
