  • I bought a generator during Covid but have never bothered to install a transfer switch. It’s on my “TODO” list but just has never seemed urgent enough to get to. So it’s extension cord city for me if I do need to power up the generator.

The power has gone out a time or two since we got it (construction in the neighborhood, car wreck near a transformer, etc.) but it’s never stayed off for much more than an hour. Once it got close to an hour and I debated whether to break out the generator but it came back on a few minutes into my mental debate.

Still, the fact I have a generate brings peace of mind. I put in a teensy bit of fuel and fire it up once a quarter and run it for a few minutes and make sure the battery is charged. Then I drain the remaining fuel and let it sit for another quarter.

I got this model (12000/9500 dual fuel):

This is what gives me pause. Every outage we have had in the past 16 years living in the same neighborhood has been less than 2 hours. And they only happen 1-2 times a year if that.

      • I posted for - I think - the first time on Reddit yesterday. The post was deleted by the moderators.

While on our trip to Texas, my son shared that he's in a fragrance club (which I did not know existed) and that he follows the Fragrance subreddit. So this was my post:

My adult son is in a Fragrance Club

When he shared with me that he was in a fragrance club, I couldn't stifle the laughter. I have nothing against clubs that specialize in perfumes, colognes, etc. What I found so funny is that my adult son - who bathes/showers about as frequently as the new moon appears, whose hands are blackened from working in a tire shop and not washing his hands (even after using the bathroom), whose teeth-cleaning regimen is highly dependent on the dental hygienist - is in a fragrance club.

Are these common traits among fragrance club participants? How much cologne does it take to cover up a month of not bathing or changing your clothing?
        The moderator posted the following:

one or more of the following apply:

Hate speech and slurs are forbidden. This includes sentiments which express prejudice or gatekeep on the basis of age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability.

Do not tag users in negative comments or coordinate dogpiling.

No inflammatory, insincere, or extraneous attempts to provoke or manipulate.

No trolling or other repetitive or nonsensical posts and comments.
And so I responded with this:

I'm having difficulty understanding how my post violated the standards. It did not involve hate speech of any kind. It did not tag any other users or coordinate dogpiling. It was not trolling, repetitive, or nonsensical.

The only other standard listed is "No inflammatory, insincere, or extraneous attempts to provoke or manipulate." That definitely was not my intent.

My son told me he follows this subreddit. My intent for that comment was that the other users would comment on my son’s lack of hygiene, saying it's not common among those interested in perfumes/cologne and that he'll see the posts of his fellow fragrance aficionados and start bathing more regularly.

Is there a way that I can post something similar to that without the post getting moderated?
As far as I can tell, the moderators have not yet responded to my response.

        • That's funny. You should post that original one to the hygiene subreddit. Maybe then it will get cross posted.

          • It was probably your son who alerted the moderators. He felt attacked!

            • It doesn't matter whether it's CougarBoard or StackOverflow or a HOA board or various SubReddits on a wide variety of topics, when you put people in the position of trying to adjudge and moderate things like "offensive" or "unkind" or "hateful" or other indeterminate concepts, you ultimately end up in the same place.

There are people who take delight in pushing the boundaries of a community and people who take delight in trying to enforce their view of the communities boundaries. I don't really like either kind of people.

I was not expecting to laugh as much as I did.

So many great things about that, and the standing ovation at the end is a chef's kiss.

I'm certain that the Beginning Band in which I was a fourth grade trombonist was very similar, and it would please me immensely if others found us as hilarious as the band in that video.

I like to think the ovation was for the conductor.

                              • Every one of those parents had to listen to their kids practice at home. I bet the standing ovation was that the concert and practice for the concert were over.
