I bought a generator during Covid but have never bothered to install a transfer switch. It’s on my “TODO” list but just has never seemed urgent enough to get to. So it’s extension cord city for me if I do need to power up the generator.
The power has gone out a time or two since we got it (construction in the neighborhood, car wreck near a transformer, etc.) but it’s never stayed off for much more than an hour. Once it got close to an hour and I debated whether to break out the generator but it came back on a few minutes into my mental debate.
Still, the fact I have a generate brings peace of mind. I put in a teensy bit of fuel and fire it up once a quarter and run it for a few minutes and make sure the battery is charged. Then I drain the remaining fuel and let it sit for another quarter.
I got this model (12000/9500 dual fuel):
