  • I haven't spent much time at all in Phoenix. Sounds like a third-world country.

    • I actually like Phoenix in small doses at the right time. It's just so different. Big and open and nothingness, with these big square blocks everywhere. As long as it isn't getting above 90 or 95 degrees the mornings are kind of cool and I kind of like it for 3 or 4 days. Then I get sick of it and want to go home.

Maybe I like it because I live in one of the greenest and tree-heavy areas of the country, and it is so different.

A good time of year to visit. The weather will be nice.

it has redeeming qualities, but man, do you pay for it may through September.

just finishing up a check in visit to my mom and her husband. She has lived most of her adult life in this valley. But every time I could her I’m so glad I made it out. It is a sprawling unsustainable morass of people. For crying out loud, there are millions of people here who can’t even drink the water! My mom stopped getting the larger bottled water years ago, and has since been sustained by cases of smaller Costco water bottles. How is that a life?!?

the weather is currently pleasant and the highway system is great. And I guess it’s probably one of the cheaper larger US cities to live in. But those are no reasons to melt away 8 months of the year running from a/c to a/c and sucking the rivers dry. Wake up people!
I know, right? Millions of those people should up and move to, say, Canada; where there is plenty of water and it’s not so hot. I mean, what’s stopping them? They’re just being a bunch of selfish jerks for not moving. Amirite?

Just cancelled my round-trip flight for DAL for the first weekend in December and used points to book a series of one-way flights in its stead: BOI-PHX, PHX-DAL, DAL-BOI, PHX-BOI, BOI-DAL. Just in case a certain university's football team is playing in Arlington the week after my nephew's wedding, I want to be able to skip the flights home in between the nuptial festivities and the title game appearance. But I also want to be able to attend the game even if I skip the wedding.

So the one-way flights give me flexibility (as long as Southwest doesn't cancel one or more of them because they deem me to not be capable of catching every flight). And with the points bookings, each of the flights is fully refundable.

Sure. There’s room for them all. Just make sure they stay east of the Salish Sea.

                  • I had a class in Phoenix once in Sept. It was 107 Degree at 5:00PM when we got out of class - it was like walking into a wall when we came out of the bldg!!!

I also had a couple of TDY trips there in Feb/Mar - nice weather

I may be small, but I'm slow.

                    • Years ago to escape the 114 degree heat in Phoenix one evening we dined with my wife's sisters and and their husbands. For obvious reasons we ate slowly, but when i opened the restaurant's exit doors around 10 pm and was hit with a wall of heat. I was about to exclaim, "Holy Shit!" or other fitting meteorological observation, but both brothers preempted me by noting with apparent delight, "Wow, it's really cooled off!" True, the temperature had dropped to a mere 100, but please. Unlivable.

                      • Here is a conversation I just had:

Me: Would you rather be really pretty but dumb or average looking but really smart?
Mrs: How pretty are we talking about?
                        Me: However pretty you want
Mrs: Could I be as pretty as Christie Brinkley?
                        Me: Sure, why not?
Mrs: Then I would choose to be dumb but pretty

I’m not sure I’ll ever understand women.

                          • Thoughts on buying a generator? Sam's has a limited time sale this weekend on a tri-fuel 12500/9500 W generator. Coincidentally? the power went out for about 45 minutes yesterday at the house.

Will it help BYU generate some offense?

You’ll also want to install a transfer plug and switch on your main panel. Will cost between $500-1000. Otherwise, your have to run extension cords from outside to anything you want to power.

We bought a couple of years ago from Costco, and had the transfer switch installed. Haven’t had a chance to use it yet.
