I talked to one of his high school coaches two weeks ago and he said he would be floored if Afalava didn't go to Utah. Said he Langi are best friends.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostJay Drew reporting that his sources are saying Jared Afalava is a lock to Utah."Take it to the Bank"

Well, I'll give him credit where credit is due: He's not one of these wishy-washy fans that hides behind several different loyalties. Hey's a BYU guy. Period. It's also the one reason I respect cougjunkie. They don't have safety schools in BCS conferences.Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostDon't mind KCCougar, he is the top cougar when it comes to pointing out how much better BYU is than Utah.
I'm the same way and I respect it. I'm a Utah man. Period. guys like cj and kc are Cougars. Period.

Really? Didn't know I had that reputation. I disagree with HL. You haven't achieved top status. You might not even be very close. We'll have to evaluate this carefully. Now that I think about it, you have made some pretty hurtful cracks over the years....Originally posted by kccougar View PostReally? Didn't know I had that reputation. afalava is underrated at ***. that would be a nice pickup. if utah could get the up and comers in the bingham program to watch their buddies succeed at utah and in the pac-12, that would be big. does dave peck have any latent loyalties?Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostI talked to one of his high school coaches two weeks ago and he said he would be floored if Afalava didn't go to Utah. To me, it seemed like Bingham has sent the vast majority of their FBS talent to BYU over the years, but since Langi picked Utah we've had better luck.Originally posted by camleish View Postafalava is underrated at ***. that would be a nice pickup. if utah could get the up and comers in the bingham program to watch their buddies succeed at utah and in the pac-12, that would be big. does dave peck have any latent loyalties?"I don't know the origin of said bitch booming."-Art Vandelay

Afalava and Langi are very talented in fact two of the most talented kids to come out of BIngham in the past few years. However neither one would do well in the BYU environment. The reason with Langi is well documented. Also the other kid out of Bingham whose name escapes me was a convicted felon before given a second chance by the Utes.Originally posted by BoylenOver View PostTo me, it seemed like Bingham has sent the vast majority of their FBS talent to BYU over the years, but since Langi picked Utah we've had better luck.
Not to say Utah can't get in on the Bingham pipeline but of the 3 cases so far none of those three would have ended up at BYU either way.*Banned*

It's not like BYU hasn't taken kids that have had problems in HS. Look at Van Noy. There are others but I really don't want to go down that road.
The point is if BYU wanted these guys and they committed to BYU, BYU would have taken them in a similar fashion in which they took Van Noy....with some guidelines and expectations before they would be fully enrolled.
Before you freak, let me say that I am NOT saying the Van Noy decision was wrong or that BYU is wrong. I'm merely using it as evidence that BYU has and will take kids with troubled pasts and that you CANNOT say that Langi and Afalava were not "BYU kids" based on troubled pasts.

BYU would've taken a guy who was busted for robbing a gas station(I think armed) like the Bingham DL last year or a guy busted in an abandoned house with pot(Langi)? If Langi's pot problem didn't become public, I think BYU might have made something work if he wanted to goto BYU.
And comparing anything to Van Noy requires the caveat that he was made to sit a year where he couldn't even enroll in school because of his DUI, to most kids that is a dealbreaker.Last edited by Hsaru; 08-08-2011, 08:06 PM.

Exactly on top of that KVN was already committed before the DUI. Bronco told him they would only honor his schollie if he sat a year.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostBYU would've taken a guy who was busted for robbing a gas station(I think armed) like the Bingham DL last year or a guy busted in an abandoned house with pot(Langi)? You better than posting this type of bullshit. It seems odd that BYU was recruiting Langi until the end if he couldn't fit in at BYU. I'm sure BYU is still recruiting Afalava.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostAfalava and Langi are very talented in fact two of the most talented kids to come out of BIngham in the past few years. BYU has gone after plenty of guys that don't seem like they fit in at BYU. It is a question of talent and if the guy has enough talent to take the risk.As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

The other kid (not afalava) pulled a gun on someone and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Both of those incidents were very public no way does BYU take either of these kids without making them sit out for at least a year similar to Van Noy. In fact I will go as far to say the D-lineman had no shot at BYU not as a convicted felon. Langi had an outside shot but like KVN would have had to sit a year.
Afalava is not a BYU kid, I have no problem saying that. That does not mean he is a bad kid by any means he is probably a great human being. But he does not fit the BYU mold.*Banned*

You are wrong about BYU recruiting Langi until the end. Check all of the beat writers, TBS, etc. Everyone had said BYU cooled on Langi (even before the incident was made public) and some (DH, G-man) reported BYU pulled his schollie.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostYou better than posting this type of bullshit. Who knows how true any of that is and I would have loved to land Langi but no way does Bronco allow him to play right away, it would have been a KVN situation all over again.*Banned*

Pot smoking is not the equivalent of a DUI. If BM really would have made a kid sit out a year for marijuana he is insane. I doubt when a BYU player gets caught smoking marijuana, unless it hits the media, that kid is going to miss an entire season. Don't give me the BYU players don't smoke pot crap. These are college kids, they aren't all abstaining.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostYou are wrong about BYU recruiting Langi until the end. I'm sorry but I'm not going to buy reports from BYU spin-masters like Dick Harmon and g-man. If someone like Jay Drew reported it, I would buy it.As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression
