Utah Recruiting

My brother in law coached him last year in the 8th grade. Said he is the most humble, hard working kid he has ever seen. He is close to 6 feet already and has some big time potential. He also told me that he was the fastest kid on their team last year. I asked him if he grew up cheering for BYU or Utah and my BIL said he wasn't sure.

In no way was I saying that Murphy was not good enough to play tight end at BYU. But there is a lot more talent at the position on the BYU roster than Utahs.

Mahina- 4 star
Wilson- 4 star
Matthews- 4 star
Friel- 3 star
Reden- 3star

They already moved Muehlman who was ranked the same as Murphy to D-end. Obviously star ratings don't mean much but at least on paper Murphy would have been buried. Not to mention he would have grey shirted last year while all of these guys solidify their spots. He would have had a definite uphill battle ahead of him.

What is the rule? I thought if kids left on missions, they became free agents upon returning. That only seems fair. I don't understand why Utah or anybody else couldn't offer him a scholarship, whether or not they recruited him out of high school.

Jake was originally supposed to leave for his mission in December 2008, but got his departure moved to October. After serving in Australia nearly two years, he was released in August 2010 to enable him to enroll in time for fall semester.

Meanwhile, BYU still believed Jake was returning in December and had no scholarship available for him until winter semester. BYU had hoped to remedy the situation by grayshirting Jake, but he wanted to be part of the team immediately. Because the Utes had not recruited Jake, they were able to offer him a scholarship in the fall. Upon returning from his mission, Jake, accompanied by his father, drove straight to a Ute practice session to observe, and that was that.

I find it hard to believe the Utes didn't recruit Jake Murphy at all, they don't send one of the higher ranked players in the state a letter or an offer even?

I don't think anyone understands the Riley Nelson rule though, I've heard it explained tons of different ways.

Holt was the number 2 tight end in the in the country. He had offers from Florida, Oregon, UCLA, Washington, Wisconsin. One of the biggest recruits the state has seen. He was also invited to the US army game.

edit:I just looked he was a 4 star on scout and ranked 5th in the country.
