I get that, and I'm not saying it's right either.

They didn't produce the results I wanted but their ability to get on the ball and snap as soon as the ref set the ball was impressive. I also expected way more procedural penalties given the pace. We weren't dinged that much at all. A couple of false starts but no more than we saw with previous offenses. I thought Peck played well in the middle too. Makes me wish we had TK because we'd be that much deeper and Manu could play opposite Bronson and we'd be really stout up front.

There is no doubt in my mind that the lightning delay helped UVA. BYU had momentum, were at midfield and the defense was tiring when they called a stop to play. We were pissed in the stands because the storm didn't move in for about 20-30 minutes. I really wish they would have let the game go a few more minutes because I think BYU would have scored on that drive.

Like Tree said in his blog and like I mentioned in my original game summary, Anae needs to realize GFGH is the wrong choice in certain situations. We should have burned clock before the first half and prevented UVA from even being able to attempt that 54 yard FG. And we should have done it again after the turnover on the kick off and most definitely on the drive with the pickle. We have to manage the clock in those situations and force the opponent to use their timeouts. Anae should know better, but I think Bronco needs to step in those moments as well and tell them to grind the clock.

GFGH still just feels weird, but I saw enough in spurts (the 92 yard drive especially) that I am not bailing. I understand Bronco and Anae wanting a schematic advantage like LaVell had with his pass happy offense to compete against better teams. I think it's just going to take some games to get it going and maybe a season or two of recruiting before it is really something that can complement the defense Bronco has built. As I said before the season, this year will go as Taysom's arm and the OL go. So far both are huge question marks. I am hopeful they improve but that will be a difficult task as the competition only gets stiffer. UVA was not a good team. They will get destroyed by Oregon at home this week and we will see what the spread option when running on all cylinders does to UVA.
I worry about varying the tempo at different points in the game. That seems like it just complicates things more than they already are. I don't think complicating things is the way to go. After Saturday, I have lowered my expectations quite a bit. This is a year to get the offense installed. That is unfortunate, given how good our defense, but it is what it is. I will be happy to get to a bowl game and win it. By that point, my hope is the offense will be much, much better. The good news is we have a lot of returning players on offense next year so we should be able to pick up where we leave off at the end of this season. Our defense will win some games for us this year. I think they would have won the UVA game for is if the conditions hadn't been so terrible.

      • I rewatched part of the game. Looks like the wide splits are gone. Also, it seems like from the sampling I rewatched that we didn't even have a TE in the game a lot of the time. This offense is more different than the last Anae offense than I expected.

The last time Anae came, he tried to implement the offense he used last exactly as is. This meant we passed on almost every down, scrapped the FB, went wide splits/shotgun on almost every down, over emphasized the WR's. Within a half season he had blended the TT/Leach offense principles into the Chow offense and we had a nice blend of shotgun-splits and under center-I formation. We were utilizing the TE and the FB. It was a damn solid offense.

I assumed he would come back and reinstall that same offense, incorporating a little bit of the Rich Rod stuff.

That is my prediction. The only snag is that I am not convinced Taysom is the right qb for that, but we will see.

Any offense that requires the QB to make passes to wide outs is probably a bad offense for Taysom right now.

                • The MWCers are feeling emboldened today for some reason. The suggestion that not being in a conference is adversely affecting recruiting was like a spark to their gasoline.

Emboldened? I am always bold sir.

                    • While it's clear that Anae's offense is very different from RichRod's, it might be enlightening to point out that RichRod basically didn't use TEs when he was at Michigan. M is only this year getting reasonable non-walk-on TEs to use after RichRod left the cupboard bare. It's still weird that Anae doesn't seem to be using them, given his track record. It could be that Hill doesn't see the middle of the field well or something.

Manumaleuna getting 11 tackles as an NT is crazy. I don't know if I've ever heard of such a thing.

What I worry about is that GFGH essentially lengthens the game, reducing variance, making it more likely that the more talented team will win. I don't know that's what BYU wants. As long as the D is that good it might work out fine, but it also might backfire having your defense on the field so much.

Poor weather is another thing that drastically increases variance, so a lot of this game can probably be discounted. It's not like BYU was going to go undefeated, so 6-6 is just as good as 11-1.

I know there are some here that think that way). I still don't think it is the conference championships that attract recruits to the big conference, though I could be wrong. It is the "prestige" factor. The best players in college football play in those conferences, so of course that is where people want to play. BYU has never been in those conferences and is perceived as a "little guy" because of it. That is the reason we struggle to recruit against Pac12 teams.

I am 100% in favor of BYU getting into the Big 12 or Pac12. It has nothing to do with playing for a conference title though.
See, and I just don't think being in the MWC will improve recruiting at all. I don't understand the perspective of those who do. I haven't heard a good explanation of why that makes sense to me.
Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I think it is being oversold but I do think playing for a conference championship is a way to provide meaningful goals for your team and maintain focus which yields better results. Players also like to win conference honors. It is a minor point but every little bit helps. Players like access to a meaningful postseason. Players like to play big time games but they also like meaningful rivalries that carry over from year to year.

I think the schedule as an independent has been more exciting and I've been glad to have some cool places to go catch games. We went to Texas a couple years ago, we're going to Wisconsin this year.

I don't get excited about New Mexico, Wyoming, etc. I don't mind playing them as part of independence, but 8 scheduled games with a bunch of mostly bad teams in the MWC doesn't sound good to me. I'd rather we play some of the big names in college football and see if we belong. So far we haven't.

I've always felt the postseason is meaningless, hopefully access will continue to improve in the future so that the playoff grows to 8 or 16 eventually.

I agree with conference honors somewhat.
