My general point is that independence may have repercussions on recruiting that were unforeseen.

Parents have influence on where their offspring/athletes go to school. I have several BYU alum friends who aren't particularly enthused about sending their kids there because the feel it has become insular and elitist.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View Postlol this is funny.
Frankly I just think the student body has become much more geeky.

If done correctly you can have the big games and the mwc. We are already going to be playing many of the mwc teams every year. Why not make it mean something? Why not provide a path to a BCS game? Play 4 meaningful ooc games and an mwc schedule. It is the best of both worlds and it isnt rocket science. Playing a meaningful season is appealing to players. Winning an mwc championship may not mean much to some fans but I guarantee you that it means something to the players. I think that being in a conference is better for the program being better for recruiting is just a byproduct of that.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostI think the schedule as an independent has been more exciting and I've been glad to have some cool places to go catch games. We went to Texas a couple years ago, we're going to Wisconsin this year.
I don't get excited about New Mexico, Wyoming, etc. I don't mind playing them as part of independence, but 8 scheduled games with a bunch of mostly bad teams in the MWC doesn't sound good to me. I'd rather we play some of the big names in college football and see if we belong. So far we haven't.
I've always felt the postseason is meaningless, hopefully access will continue to improve in the future so that the playoff grows to 8 or 16 eventually.
I agree with conference honors somewhat.Dyslexics are teople poo...

No shit they have influence. I can just hear that conversation. I wasn't necessarily writing about the Mountain West. I was generally referring to a Big Five type of conference. However USU is in the Mountain West and I'd swap their offensive line out for ours right now.
We're stuck in independence for a while but whether or not the decision pans out remains to be seen. One of the ways BYU could be affected is recruiting.

Aha... So BYU's recruiting would be better in a Big Five conference? Who on earth do you imagine yourself arguing with on that front?Originally posted by Shaka View PostI wasn't necessarily writing about the Mountain West. Did those same parents say that they didn't want their son to attend a school full of smart kids?Originally posted by Shaka View PostYes What's even worse is I heard their parents saying it.

Maybe they feel their kids would be better off in a school with a more diverse LDS student body. BYU used to be that way prior to ratcheting up the academic standards for applicants.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostDid those same parents say that they didn't want their son to attend a school full of smart kids?

What it's not stating, however, is that BYU's recruiting has been hurt by not being in a conference.Originally posted by Shaka View PostIt's stating the obvious for sure.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

Except when it comes to O-linemen. I guess it could be argued that UTah has been picking up O-line recruits BYU used to be getting. I'm not arguing that, just a hypothetical. This is all an exercise to let loose from frustration and point to one reason why this glorious team just lost to Virginia.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostWhat it's not stating, however, is that BYU's recruiting has been hurt by not being in a conference.

Please point me to quotes from parents saying that they don't want their kids to be around too many smart kids. Getting a full-ride scholarship to a school with high academic standards is a recruiting advantage.Originally posted by Shaka View PostMaybe they feel their kids would be better off in a school with a more diverse LDS student body. If you disagree then please tell me why we lacking offensive linemen. I'm sure there are other viable reasons.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostWhat it's not stating, however, is that BYU's recruiting has been hurt by not being in a conference.

This is such a lame ass argument. What do you want BYU to do? Lower their academic standards so we can get more football players that hate geeks? Makes no sense at all. And what kind of parent would want to send their kid to a school that would do something like that?Originally posted by Shaka View PostParents have influence on where their offspring/athletes go to school.
