The Utah 2011 Football Thread

So we've lost to USC, Washington, and a strong ASU team.

We just arrived in this neighborhood. We brought the guys we had. We were optimistic that they could compete at a level we knew would be tougher.

We knew we were inexperienced in several key areas like RB, and DB. We knew our O-line was particularly thin. We suspected our QB was not durable enough to complete an entire season.

Whit will right this ship... at least as much as he can with the players we've got this season. Adversity builds character, and if we don't let losing become a habit (which we will not) then fighting through this will make us stronger.

This team would not have gone undefeated in the MWC either. This would not have been a BCS run team under any conference circumstances.

I'm happy the Utes are facing this tougher competition. It will make them stronger, deeper, and faster... Hell we might even learn to hang on to the damn football.

If you want to be the best, you have to face the fire! Get knocked down, and get yourself back up!

The only easy day was yesterday.

It may not look like it from the immediate view... but we are going in the right direction... we will get there.

How may BCS bowls do they have?

We have a track record of success, and a proven field general that will recruit harder, and prepare harder.

USC, ASU, and UW have been very impressed by the proven track record of success.

I don't doubt Whit expects to win. Actually winning in another issue, though.

Great post except nobody was talking about the things you mentioned above. All I heard was how you were going to win the South and play in the Pac-12 championship game with a shot at the Rose Bowl.

I did hear about how good John White was especially after Montana, and how the O-line was one of the best in the conference (some of you did say it lacked depth but the starters were top notch. I also heard how with Utahs defense Wynn will be more than serviceable.

Seems to me that Utahs 54th ranked defense shares some of the blame here.

Link? You keep saying this but not backing it up. By the way, I never said Utah would make the Rose Bowl. I always thought Utah would end up 3rd in the South. I also have consistently said that 7 wins or more that I'll be very happy with this season.

I agree our defense deserves some of the blame. We still are having huge problems stopping the pass, unless of course Jake Heaps is throwing the ball. Stopping the run hasn't been a problem.

Top Ute - picking fights with ute fans makes no sense. some of us aren't as torn apart in our fandom as you might be after the last few weeks. we can still maintain an air of support and hopefullness and be just as frustrated as you are with the losses. some look at it with a half-full and some with a half-empty mentality. it sounds simplistic, and it is. climb on board with us and hope for the best.

if i have learned nothing else as a ute fan, it is that there is great reward for being supportive and never losing a supportive attitude towards the schoold and its athletic teams.

Who's saying anything about not being supportive or not hoping for the best in future years? I don't recall saying "I'm through with this team," like at least one other Ute fan has on this site, nor am I a free agent fan looking for a team on the right side of .500. I'm just telling things like they are. The idea that by doing so makes me less of a fan (or more invested than others) is garbage.

You see my posts as picking fights with Ute fans, and I don't see it as anything like that at all. I'm just trying to get some people to see that what they're saying about certain things is putting my bullshit meter on high alert.

Leave it to the BYU fans in this thread to recognize that.

No, it's not. You're mischaracterizing my post. I said that like SU, I am not down yet. "Yet" is the operative word. I'm not thrilled at all with the way things have gone, and a bad loss at Pitt will leave me pretty depressed.

I won't speak for SU or OrangeUte, but I think what they and I are saying is that a season is more than one bad streak, and a program is more than one bad season. That's just an effort to take the long view. We all knew being in the PAC12 was going to be tougher, and most of us expected to lose to USC and ASU. The unpleasant surprises have been that we lost to UW at home, the margins of the last 2 losses, and that we had 10 TOs in those 2. A loss to Pitt would put us inside the door of a pretty bad season record, and we don't want the first PAC-12 season to be like that.

Bottom line: Work with us here. We're just being fans and hoping for the best, while recognizing the future potential for the program. :crazy:

I'm not going to dissect every word/post you've made leading up to this discussion, but when SU said the losing hasn't gotten him down, you responded/asked (rhetorically, I presume) which Ute fan would be bothered by it?

My opinion of you hasn't changed because of that, but it doesn't change my belief that it was a ridiculous viewpoint.

We knew being in the Pac-12 would be tougher, but any Utah fan who figured we would be the conference doormat three games in simply isn't being honest with him/herself. Now I'll say there's time to change that as it pertains to 2011, and 2012 brings a clean slate.

But I long for the day when we can gloat over our feats within the conference, rather than just pounding the same hammer over and over again about how we're in the cool kids club (or 54-10, for that matter)
