  • The Utah 2011 Football Thread

So now that a 10-3 season is over, with many question marks hanging over next season, what do y'all think, Ute fans?

    1. Will Wynn regain his 2009 Poinsettia Bowl flair?

    2. Will we develop a defensive secondary?

    3. Will our linebackers develop into actually being factors in the game?

    4. Will we have a pass rush once again?

These questions look pessimistic but on reflection, but most of this seems fixable.

Re #1, there is every reason to think a healthy Wynn can be the QB we need.

Re #2 I need the input of smarter football minds than mine. But history shows us KW knows how to develop a defense.

Same answer for #3 and 4, assuming we have athletes who can do the job. I guess you can't coach speed and agility.

Tell me, Ute fans, what do you think? (I'm looking at Jarid, Hot Lunch, BoylenOver, U-Ute, and others who know more about football than I do.)

I think you need a new QB.

I think it is time to abandon the spread offense. They need to play to the strengths they have and stop trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

With some halfway decent depth at TE, they need to get Moei, Rodgers (and Tonga moving forward) more involved in the offense.

How can you watch Reggie Dunn return a kick 45 yards with ease and not get him in the game?

The D showed a lot of promise for a good chunk of the game. Frankly, I'm impressed we held Boise St. to 26 points. Glad Taplin-Ross is a Senior, but i hope Burton comes back. He went from 31 to 60 overall in a matter of weeks and I suspect when it is all said and done, he'll get a third round grade and be drafted in the 4th or 5th round...stay in school Brandon!

The D will also benefit (hopefully) from the return of Nai Fotu at either DE or OLB. In fact, we might see all our LBs replaced, though I have a tough time seeing Chaz Walker not starting next year.

The last few commits this year are critical. Utah is in play for some big time talent and moving forward to Pac 12 season #1, we need to land a few of them.

Those are just some initial thoughts.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Herbstreet was kind of gushing about Wynn at the beginning of the game, which I thought was interesting. In the right system, Wynn can be successful...he's just not a spread QB, so either it has to go or he has to go.

Shreve vs. Robles vs. Wynn. Should be interesting.

What was confirmed tonight is that they turned to true freshman Wynn out of quiet desperation. Cain wasn't going to take them anywhere other than through cakewalks.

Also, need to invest in some stick-em for 2011.

Maybe, but Wynn had us all believing in him after the Poinsettia last year. Remember? But you're right, it will be interesting to watch next year. PAC12, baby! Notwithstanding the hope and prayers of some of our Cougar friends to the contrary, I have a hunch we are not destined to be the next Washington State.

10-3 isnt a bad year. With the exception of ND, we beat everyone we shouldve and lost to everyone we shouldve. We werent in TCU or BSUs league this year.

Im not concerned one bit after yesterdays performance. Off to the P12 and everything changes. We have the right guy at the top. He's one of the best in the game, no question in my mind,a dnd now has access to a greater pool of talent coaching and player wise. My hope is that he sees beyond the 50 mile radius of SLC and looks for key assistants and coordinators across the country.

I expect it will take 3 years to figure out the pace and culture of the P12 -- after that, we should be competitive and win the division occassionally -- is 20% of the time asking too much? Perhaps.

Bottom line. Cant tell you how pumped I am that we're finally rubbing shoulders with the greats in the P12. I wasn't certain this was going to happen in my lifetime.

What do Ute fans here think of this comment from utefans...

                        NEW: I don't. [-]

We make fun of Bronco for his handling of his staff. But you have to give him credit, because Whit hasn't shown that he has it in him to let staff go.

Instead, he helps them find other jobs. But if he can't get them other gigs, I really don't see him letting anybody go. He's a very loyal guy. Do you think he lets go of Schramm? Roderick? BJ? Jay Hill?
                        I sure as heck don't.

Look - we heaped a lot of blame on Ludwig. And we're seeing the same problems with Schramm and Roderick. Coach Whittingham has a lot more to do with our offense than most give him credit for. He may not instruct the offense positions or call every play, but he dictates the tempo. What do you think Sean Smith was saying in his tweet tonight? I know many who have played for him and coached under him who are very open at saying that Whit controls the type of play-calling and decides on the personnel even more than the OC does.

Whit's not firing anybody because most are just young yes men doing what they're asked by KW. The only way that anybody is being let go is if there is friction on the staff, coaches who aren't getting along with KW.

I've been wrong many times, but I'd be shocked if anybody on this staff were actually let go.
I guess I was a little surprised because I've always thought of Whitt the same way I've thought of Bronco - a defensive coach that leaves the offense to his assistants.
