Many people identify Tommy Trojan as the symbol of the university. However, Tommy Trojan is not USC's official mascot; that title belongs to Traveler, a white Andalusian horse. Before Traveler, a real local dog named George Tirebiter served as the unofficial mascot. A statue of the dog is also a feature of the Campus.

I continue to learn interesting things because of DDD.

      Maybe they're in the horse.

No, that's where they keep George Tirebiter

We shall piece this puzzle together two weeks from today. When the UTES kick off their foray PAC 12 season against the boys of Troy. I'll bring my magnifying glass and Sherlock Holmes hat.

          • 4 days until the 2011 Utah Ute football season commences!!!

Sounds like our OLine is on the mend and withthe addition of the JuCo xfer a little more stable than expected. Receivers and secondary are fast, although young, and talented... DLine and LBers are a strength, and Wynn is the second coming of Ty Detmer (although in Darnell Arceneaux's fragile body)... I'm so ready to get this party started!!!!

            • my biggest concern ...

... at this point is the place kicker. Whitt said today, that position is the only one that hasn't been decided. That is not great news.

              Ugh!

A medicore to bad kicking game can cost you games, I hope someone steps up.

Agreed. It will cost us games if it's not fixed. Just think of all the wins over the last 3-4 years decided by a FG.

Ignoring the Louis Sakoda years, this seems to be a perpetual problem on The Hill. Why is that?
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Phillips was a solid kicker. Not Sakoda by any stretch, but I was more surprised by his misses than by his makes

In the 80's Utah had some really sweet kickers. A guy named Andre Guardi who looked like John Travolta, and a guy named Wayne Lammle whose red afro was so large that it filled the entire frame of his roster photo. In those days, games weren't close enough to be decided by kickers, so no one really knew how good those guys were.

Then sometime in the early 90's, Ron McBride received an Unsigned Letter that placed a curse on Utah's kicking game for 10 years. I am not making this up. Being a man of sound mind, proper judgement, and also being more than 50% clinically insane, Ron McBride believed the Unsigned Letter, which gave the Unsigned Letter great power.

The list of kicking issues during the Reign of the Unsigned Letter is long and distinguished, but I think the absolute pinnacle was when a kicker named Golden Freaking Whetman couldn't find his helmet when it was time for him to enter the game and kick a field goal. He couldn't find his freaking helmet. He lost his helmet. Also, he complained that there were no orange slices at halftime. Jeez.

Finally, in about 2003 the 10 year curse was lifted, and the power of the Unsigned Letter faded into darkness. Things have been pretty good since then.

Heaven help us all if the Unsigned Letter finds the will to return.

Louie Sakoda was money as a kicker.

But he was insatiable as Data in The Goonies.

                                I was there.

Whittingham's remarks were basically a verbal recital of the two deep on offense and defense. Fascinating stuff for the illiterate in the Crimson Club, of whom there are many.

He did pump up Nate Fakahafua again, and as far as I can tell, Nate Fakahafua is good enough that his head coach has taken an inordinate amount of time to learn how to pronounce his last name. So I think that means he's pretty good.

He also slapped down Katy Lied and her mean spirited whisper campaign about the health of Jordan Wynn's shoulder. I can't wait for Jordan Wynn to actually play a game on Thursday so we can talk about whatever injury he manages to sustain in it, rather than his botched shoulder surgery.

The conversation at our table centered around whether the football or basketball team would win more games. I'm leaning basketball, but that's probably just lingering buyer's remorse.

The meal served was lasagna and pasta salad. Who in the name of Hod Sanders serves pasta salad as a side with lasagna? Meier's Prime does the catering, and they need to stick with the chicken. Everybody loves chicken. It goes well with pasta salad.
