Some developments in our recruiting areas.
Morgan will stay in Texas, and be Utah's only full-time recruiter there. His focus will be Houston, which makes sense since most of our recruits have come from that area, and it's close to Blinn JC as well, where we've had good success.
Tim Davis will get NoCal.
Kauaha'aha'a will be our man in the islands, and get a piece of Los Angeles.
A-Rod stays in the OC. Ditto for Schramm in San Diego.
Utah is splitting up the state with an additional coach -- Sitake is being taken off the islands and is getting everything west of I-15, as well as L.A. (presumably the Valley). Jay Hill will get the eastern part of the state, and keep Vegas and Arizona.
Chow will target select recruits nationally, but primarily in Hawaii and California. My guess is he'll work exclusively on QBs.
Brian Johnson: Someone has to work the Inland Empire, and it's probably him. He'll be in SoCal regardless.
I think this is a smart strategy. Our efforts in the Metroplex were not paying off, and we've lost two of our assistants in Texas anyway (Miller was let go, and Alford is in a new position within the program that makes him the odd man out in terms of allowable number of coaches a staff is allowed to have to recruit).
The state is becoming a more consistent producer of HS talent, and our efforts in-state should reflect that.
I like having Brian in (presumably) the IE. We've had great success here in the past, and the Utah name carries weight because of Kyle's efforts here for years when he was an assistant, plus the numerous players we've gotten from this area in the past.Comment

A couple of position changes this spring to keep an eye on.
Luke Matthews
Old Position: WR
New Position: RB
Matthews was a RB in high school(and switched to WR during his RS year) so not much of a stretch. Reports are that he is looking pretty good carrying the ball, but I think the real intrigue is how he could be used in the passing game. Not many RB's have the experience running good routes and catching the ball that Luke has. His speed was ok for a WR, but will look much better matched up on an LB when in the passing game. I think this is a change that will stick. Chow has commented positively on what he can bring to the Offense. It is easy to see him used similarly to how Chow used Matt Bellini for BYU. Motioning out of the backfield, toss sweeps out of split backs, play action through the line, then drifting into the flat. I think he sticks here as the numbers game at WR does not work out with the changes in the offense.
Boo Anderson
Old Position: LB
New Position: FB
Without have a true fullback on the roster, this spot is wide open. Anderson likely has embraced this change as he was likely to get buried on the depth chart at LB so he sees this as a chance to see the field in a more prominent role. As a blocker he has been blowing people out. As a LB, he has the physicality to play the position. Surprisingly, in drills, he has shown the ability to catch the ball(which is essential in Chow's system), but, as camp progresses, we will see if that is a mirage or not. I think he sticks here as it appears that he will not see the field much at LB in the nest 2 years.
Lucky Radley
Old Position: RB
New Position: CB
This one surprised me some, as I liked the moves and speed Radley has shown with the ball. He was a standout on the scout team as an RB. I wonder if Chow told Whit that he wants to go a different direction at RB that what his skill set would offer.(I see Langi as more the mold of RB at Utah in the future). Given that there are players well ahead of Radley on the depth chart at CB, I don't think he will see much time there this year, which may be a good thing, as it allows him to learn the technique and nuances of the position. He is a RsFr so he has plenty of time to work into the lineup in the future. I see this move as one that has an eye to 2012-13.
Brian Blechen
Old Position: SS
New Position: LB
This is the most hyped move of the spring. It is the one that makes the most sense as well, despite leaving the secondary without a returning starter. Blechen played SS like a linebacker. He was in the box plenty and was a big asset in the run defense. He was a liability in coverage, mostly because of his aggression cost us on play action, and taking poor pursuit angles. He will be allowed to fill out to his build more naturally. he has put on 10 pounds(based on rosters) since the beginning of last year. I think he is going to be a star in the Sylvester Stevens mold by his senior year.
Trevor Reilly
Old Position: DE
New Position: LB
This is the one that seems to make sense on paper. Reilly would add size to the LB crew in running situations, and slide back to DE for obvious passing situations. One of the main concerns about Reilly as a DE was that he struggled to keep his weight above 225 last year, which will be a big liabilty as a DE in the Pac-12. As LB, I worry that he will have enough lateral quickness, and at 6'5", I worry that he will struggle with leverage when up against interior lineman. Long term, I see Reilly as a pass rush specialist at DE, unless he is able to figure out how to get his weight up closer to 240. With his height, you would think he has the build to get the weight on, but time will tell.

Ute fans, now that hoops season is over, time to start getting amped up for the PAC football season. It is going to be exciting. If it were BYU, I would be extremely pumped, so I can only imagine how stoked you all are for Fall.
What are the games you are looking forward to most? What roadies will you be making, if any?
Seattle is always a great roadie, as is the Bay Area trip. SC refers to it as "The Weekender," because they either play at Kal or at The Farm every year. The school has a massive pep rally at Union Square and it is a big tradition.
Not too keen on the AZ roadies (sorry, just being honest!) and I would imagine that a SoCal trip will always be a fun diversion, esp if you are toting the kids to Diz.
I have been to Eugene once at that stadium is a great experience.
Wazzou and Corvalis are dumps. Skip those trips unless you live in that area.
Anyhow, I have put together a fairly extensive game day guide for SC visitors and have added some new stuff to it very recently. If there is any interest in that for our Ute brethren that are making the pilgrimage, let me know and I will be happy to post.
