Putnam is academically ineligible? No small blow for that defensive line. He was playing quite well in the 2nd half of last season.

Bummer. But it sounds like there is potential that he could still be eligable by the start of the season

The school originally announced in a news release that Putnam would be ineligible for the entire season, but amended that statement on its web site to say the Brigham City, Utah, native is working to get eligible.

If he can't practice this fall then it looks like Rowley will be the starter.

1. Bronco has already indicated that he expects to rotate Fangupo and Fuga over to DE in some sets, meaning there would already be some reduction for Putnamn's reps

2. Rowley has far more upside than Putnam and I was actually worried that playing behind 8th year senior Putnam would curb Rowley's chances to develop

3. Dulan coming back helps us fill in the depth

4. I would expect Jadon Wagner to move into the 3rd down rush specialist role

So yeah - a loss for depth, but I think we're fine.

The loss of Putnam hurts mainly if BYU loses like 3 other DE's to injury. Otherwise, the depth is good enough that it's not going to affect the team's performance.

QB stats from "team" session: Heaps (two series): 8/9, 108 yds, 2 TD. Nelson (two series): 2/3, 9 yds. Lark (one series): 2/3, 20 yds.

Pretty cool to see green-jerseyed QB Riley Nelson busting his hump down the field in kickoff cover drills. The guy is simply a gamer.

So much talent at TE w/ Holt, Wilson, Mahina, etc. In Doman's offense they will block more, be play action pieces but still flex out some.

Mike Alisa is a RB who reminds me of Harvey Unga a lot (same HS-Timpview). Was a LB in 08.

More observations: TE Colby Jorgensen sticks out (6'7''). DL Hebron Fangupo has tree trucks for calves & arms.SS Daniel Sorensen is a leader

Daniel Sorensen should prove to be very hard to beat out at SS...looked very solid in coverages throughout the day, in every drill

FS Mike Hague closed out the final series closing on a short pass on 3rd and 6that was whistled for no gain...nice play

my notes have Austin Holt as the only TE catching a pass during team drills...Mahina had a good grab during 7-on-7s

Bronco on whether it was nice to see a full-go Jordan Pendleton on day 1: "Better than nice...he did a great job, he's in excellent shape."

Receivers McKay Jacobson (diving catch), Ross Apo (TD), Rhen Brown (TD) and Cody Hoffman all impressive today.

Secondary rotation today-- 1's: Buckner, Eason, Sorensen, Uale. 2's: Comer, P. Hadley, Galea'i. Hague. 3's: Everett, PoVey, Mees, Pendley.

Fangupo saw reps at DE with the 2s on defense and Tuiloma in the middle...Vea played NT with the 1s flanked by Rowley and Manumaleuna (

Jordan Pendleton saw a full set of reps at full speed...can't remember the last time I saw him practice like that

Joe Sampson played at CB and is adjusting to new practice regimen..will take at least a week before he can settle in according to coaches

Buckner had a very good practice session, which is normal for him...played with the 1s at FCB with Eason on the other side

Jacobson had a 45-yarder, beating the coverage by considerable distance during 7-on-7s...ball was a little overthrown by Heaps, but complete

Simple observation of Day 1 offense #BYU: Total opposite in every way of what Robert Anae fielded past five seasons.

recruits Brayden Kearsley and Brandon Fanaika were in attendance...Kearsley has been recruiting Fanaika hard

Famika Anae was a bit of a surprise manning the RT spot with the 2s as he looks healthy coming off his ACL tear

BYUcamp Impressed with Timpview 6-7 TE Coleby Jorgensen during newcomer's session. Very agile, good speed, great hands, big target.

#BYUcamp On Apo TD catch called back, Bucker had perfect coverage but couldn't defend Apo's height on perfect Heaps strike.

Mike Hague running as the 2nd-string FS, but also first in as nickel back. Secondary rotation was consistent all day w/ 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's.

Looks like they're going to find a way to get Hague on the field.

Marcus Mathews is going to be a weapon for BYU; he's very versatile (flex TE and X wide receiver), always seems to come down with the ball.

Apo grabs the headlines, but I thought fellow Z receiver Rhen Brown had a very good day today. Brown said to have had a solid spring/summer.

Will be nice to have some additional options outside of Hoff, Apo and McHobbit.

On BYU's first day of fall football practice, it looks like the Cougars' offense will return to some of its simple roots: Elements taken from Sid Luckman and Doug Scovil; formations used by Bill Walsh, and a strong tinge of LaVell Edwards in the days he hired a daring and creative Dewey Warren just after the Vietnam War.

What we saw Saturday was a multi-dimensional West Coast offense designed to make a defense cover the entire field on every play. And not be predictable.

New offensive coordinator Brandon Doman wants to run an offense that will keep defenses guessing, off-balance and on their collective heels.

Every offense would like to do just that, of course. But that wasn't exactly BYU the past five seasons.

Doman likes what Boise State does and doesn't mind plagiarizing. After all, this stuff will replace BSU as a regular on ESPN.

In fact, Doman has spent the past nine months researching desired plays from a myriad of coaches he's admired, and he's counseled with NFL quarterbacks John Beck, Max Hall and former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer.

I'm getting a ton of Jordan Johnson questions, and the answer is: today he was the fourth-string FC, behind Buckner, Comer and Everett.

That seems weird. He was reportedly neck-and-neck with Buckner during the spring.

While Heaps has always been a confident player, he looked particularly sharp as he got the majority of the repetitions with the top offense.

"It felt good for Day 1," Heaps said. "I think I did what I wanted to accomplish. There were a couple of throws that I'm kind of mad that I didn't make, but that's me being a perfectionist. If I go 9 out of 10, I'm going to be really upset about that one pass I missed. But I'm really excited about this football team and where we're at. To see our offense click the way we did, it's just going to keep getting better."

Doman said his young protege had improved dramatically even since spring practice, a fact he attributes to some of the life experiences Heaps has had including getting married.

Bronco takes recommendations from team captains/leaders after summer on where guys should be on the depth chart, right? So on Day 1 of practice if there are guys who have shifted significantly can we assume that is a big reason why, meaning he maybe wasn't present as much as others during the summer?
