The fan's source for BYU Cougars news. Coverage of BYU football, BYU basketball and all other BYU Cougars sports from local and national sports and media websites.

"This season, special teams coaching responsibilities have been re-organized, with Secondary coach Nick Howell taking over special teams oversight. Outside LB coach Kelly Poppinga will be in charge of kickoff coverage, while RB coach Joe DuPaix will handle kickoff returns. Howell will be over punt returns, and ILB coach Paul Tidwell will take care of punt coverage. "

Does anyone else think its odd that BYU doesn't have a Special Teams Coordinator? Most High school teams have a coach specifically for special teams, Or the head coach does it. I know most people don't care about special teams, but it has been a weak point for the cougars for a while now.

IIRC, Bronco used to do special teams at one point. They probably had to farm it out to the other coaches when Bronco took the defense over.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

“I could leave today, right now, and give up the defense and the coaching to Travis, and they wouldn’t miss a beat,” said Howell. “It’s so important for our free safety to know the defense inside and out and understand how to position guys with what the offense does, and Travis does that as well as anyone.”
Comments like this are what make me think Uale isn't going anywhere.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Unless he takes a monumental leap forward this year I really don't like to hear this.

Maybe Howell could leave, so Uale would have to take over coaching for him, and then someone that doesn't take horrible angles or make poor in-play reads could man the FS spot.

Uale's actual on-field performance could improve a lot as a senior. Hopefully it does. Because like you, I can't imagine him not being the starter when the season starts.

I always feel like hes going to get an unnecessary roughness and or an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty every time hes near the ball at the end of a play.

I am not sure I can remember one time where he was near the ball at the end of a play unless you mean 15 yards behind a receiver as he races in to the end zone.

Well, then clearly that would make for a very late hit!

BYU Football Fireside schedule is out

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I like our odds for a victory at every fireside on that schedule.

Sounds like a guy who could be red-shirted until he gets his legs back. Then make a huge impact in the future.

That gives us cover for one of the young LDS stars who chose to serve their mission by bringing attention to the BYU and thus to its sponsoring institution!

I hope I'm proven totally wrong and forced to eat a casserole made from my posts on the subject, but I'm a bit skeptical about whether Hine will make a huge impact - at least at running back. His video looks to me like he runs very high and doesn't show much lower body agility. He's fast, but no faster than, for example, Diluigi. And he has a build that looks to me like he's not going to go much over 200 pounds, if that big. His high jumping ability is nice and suggests one category of athleticism but sort of has limited application on the football field.

I think he's got the right build for a WR though or a move to safety. But here's to him becoming a superstar RB and joining the pantheon of Cougar greats.
