  • Sounds like D. Sorensen's got the Kat position all locked up.

At safety, Daniel Sorensen has the edge at Kat according to Mendenhall, but today it was Carter Mees getting the first-string reps. Usual backup Jray Galea'i sat out with leg soreness, giving Mees the opening today, with Sorensen playing mostly with the twos. Mendenhall says Galea'i and Mees are battling for the backup spot.

    • My BYU football chub currently exceeds my Paul's Boutique chub, which is substantial. Is this too early? I'm worried.

Blaine was talking up DSor pretty good on True Blue last night, as was Bronco today.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

            @BrandonCGurney Brandon Gurney
got word that Heaps is really high on new WR Terenn Houk...likes his abilities and how he runs routes...bodes well for the future at WR
I was getting nervous, and am probably still nervous, that with the move to ESPN the scholarship that was given to Houk might have been more valuable if sat on for this season and then given to someone else in next year's recruiting class. Glad to hear I will likely continue to be worse at evaluating talent I've never seen play than coaches who do this kind of thing for a living.

            • Is Houk LDS? It would be nice, if he does well, to get him on the field for 4 straight years.

Edit: I forgot that it was this kid. Still don't know if he's LDS, but can you image that fro blessing the sacrament? that would be sweet.

                He is not.

Houk isn’t LDS, but shares a very strong Christian belief system, which made him feel at home while on his visit to BYU a couple of weeks ago. In that way, he’s very similar to current BYU player Joshua Quezada, who was his host while on his trip.

I'm still worried about him. Just seems weird that nobody around here was recruiting him.

                      • I know it's talked about every year, but a quick look at the injury list on Cougar Tracks reveals a worrisome number of hamstring/groin strains. Especially considering that it Day 3 of fall camp.

                        • 2-3 of those strains were from summer workouts.

I'm sure they were, which is exactly the point. A lot of people bash Omer's strength program, which some alledge is prone to hamstring and groin injuries.

I listened to Hans this morning and my belief is that in regard to Riley he has a selective memory. I missed Jan's take but it wouldn't surprise me if it's the same ans Hans.

Last spring the topic was raging when camp was underway. Virtually everyone expected Lark to take the backup job at that point. The fact of the matter was Riley outplayed Lark to a significant degree during camp and was the best QB in the spring game putting forth an impressive effort. All this running the same offense as the other QB's. After camp Hans and the other members of the fourth estate were forced to admit that Riley could get the job done. In fact many were singing his praises. At end of spring Lark was deemed to be a disappointment and Nelson had a firm lock on the backup spot.

Fast forward to the second day of fall camp. After one rep resulting in a pick Nelson is now out of the race and Lark is wrapping up the backup job. Radio personalities are falling all over themselves to knock Nelson all the while contradicting what they were saying last spring. Bronco of course was more diplomatic stating that both QB's had good camps.

Truly I get why this is happening. Nelson did not help himself during the summer with some lackluster performances and it would seem that Lark has elevated his game somewhat. With that said I think all of the talk about Lark passing Nelson is amazingly premature. Like Bronco said, it's a long camp. Lark may indeed rise up and take the job. I have no problem if he does. I love QB battles and would like to see this one rage all camp long.

I love Hans and for that matter Jan. My favorite thing about them is tend to tell things like they are without regard for the feelings of the fans. I am going to disagree with how Hans is handling this issue. Today he cited Nelson's performance last fall as a reason he can't be the QB. However he also has made excuses for Heaps performance early last season stating that he didn't get the reps he needed. I find this completely unfair. Lack of reps affected both QB's. Both would have been better had they been given the reps as the starter. Instead we had a failed quarterback experiment with benefit of the doubt being solely given to Heaps.

I'm not fully bugged by this selective memory. Many fans on the boards have also completely forgotten what transpired during the spring. I do find the rush to pile on Nelson to be a bit annoying. I hope both of them battle it out and may the best guy win. So far the vast majority of the time that man has been Nelson. Maybe in camp Lark will be that guy.

I guess Hans has done a switcher roo. I remember in last falls camp he talked glowingly of Riley.

                              • Will Bronco move the captain to the bench and start KVN?

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall has a tough decision to make.

Start a highly-respected, blue-collar senior that has been named as a team captain by his peers at sam linebacker, or start a sophomore player that has NFL written all over him.

Kyle Van Noy began fall camp listed as the backup to Jordan Pendleton on the weakside, but his future this year could well be on the strong side in BYU’s 3-4 defensive alignment.

If the coaching staff wants to get the most talent on the field possible, Van Noy is the obvious choice to start over Jameson Frazier.
