I've been pounding the pavement all day searching for clues regarding this mystery shirt. I spoke with the Athletics Communications office as well as the Licensing office. I finally have the scoop.

This logo is known as the "Sailor Hat" logo. The recently revived 70s/80s BYu logo (like the ones in the Fanzz pic I posted today) is known as "Beet Digger." Any Sailor Hat logo gear is part of Nike's Vault Line. Nike prints vault line stuff once a year and then decides whether to make it team only or team and public.

The guy had not seen the youtube clip yet so I directed him to CUF to watch it. I thought he would hang up on me but he actually asked me to hold on while he went and checked it out. The second he saw the shirt, he knew what was going on.

Turns out that this shirt is NOT available to the public, nor will it ever be. Further, Nike didn't really "make" this shirt. Apparently, Nike provides all its schools with blanks (blank t shirts with pre-printed logos on them) and then allows the schools to print up their own shirts locally, pending Nike design approval, of course.

This particular Sailor Hat shirt is from a blank. I asked how he knew for sure. This is the cool part. He said the shirt is an error. The Sailor Hat logo is in the negative....everything on that logo that is white should be black and everything that is black should be white. He said the equipment manager must have had them printed, but they were printed incorrectly so the batch was either scrapped entirely or given out to the team anyway. But BYU would not have approved the t shirt because the coloring of the Sailor Hat logo is reversed.

He appears to be right, as you can compare the Sailor Hat logo in the clip with the logo on this knit cap (which I happen to own, thanks)



So not only is it a team issued shirt, it is also a collector's item because it is contraband.

Does anyone know someone on the team? Or the equipment manager? I want one of those shirts!

ps he also said that the "Band of Brothers" shirts featured in the video clip will be available in the bookstore in time for the Utah home game.

However, I received a disconcerting call from the bookstore today that my shirt is out of stock

BUT that they had a similar shirt made by adidas. I asked him to direct me to an image of the shirt. There we were, over the phone surfing the site, and it seemed there wasn't one up online, so he was going to email me an image.

I was pleasantly surprised by this:

They have that one at Fanzz. It is an awesome shirt. Very soft cotton, shirt looks vintage. It is called the Beet Digger. great t shirt.

I am looking to get one of those, too.

I want the following: beet digger flex fit cap, beet digger retro t shirt, white coaches Polo (for travel day this Friday, next Friday, etc).

The sailor hat log was on the back of the shirt, not the front, and I don't recall the big Nike logo below. I'm trying to find the photo online again.

Two things we can learn from this.

1. DDD works within walking distance of the Fanzz store at Gateway.

2. DDD is off the Fit Day regimen (large?!)
