"I love it because he's a technician," said Mathews. "It's fun to get the specific details that will make us legit. I don't know how else to say it. It's fun to do all that little drill work to help us get us into and out of our breaks.
"I feel better out there," Mathews continued. "I feel better in my routes, and everyone looks better too, not just me. Everyone is seeing a big improvement in how we get out of our breaks and how we run our routes, and that's exciting!"
There has only been one day of spring practice, but the receivers are already buzzing.
"He met with every one of us personally a couple of times just to get to know us," Mathews said. "He sat down with us to go over some goals with him in his office. He met with us personally to go over some things to help us get better out here on the field and in his office."
First off there is definitely a different feel, coaches were fired up and Doman and Dupaix are definitely the vocal coaches of the group! You can literally hear them from anywhere on the practice field. I can't speak for others who attended, but I felt a sense of urgency in everything the players and coaches did. Take it for what it's worth, I am not a journalist, just a rabid fan. I like to read others insights so I figured I would share mine.
Offensively QB's- I was reminded yesterday just how strong of an arm Heaps has, when you see Lark and Riley throw my opinion is Jake is on another level. I read online last night a quote of Heaps saying something to the effect that "This is my team." I will agree that offensively he seems to hold the reigns, but as far as a team we have some good defensive leaders who would disagree. Jake was very vocal and is a fiery guy who gets after it every play and was demanding perfection. I am obviously not telling you something you don't know already.
RB's- I thought they looked good Michael Alisa really could contribute this year, he had a fumble that cost the offense late in the scrimmage, but he is big and fast and has great hands I was reall impressed with him. Also David Foote to me is deceptively quick he made some good plays today as well. The RB's were utilized quite a bit out of the backfield. Think Harvey's freshman year when he caught a lot of passes, I got the feeling they will utilize them a lot more out of the backfield then in recent years. Fall will be interesting when Hine is back and whenever Phillips gets his academics straight I am sure he will add a dimension of speed that we just don't have with DiLuigi, Kariya and Quezada.
WR's- Apo is fast real fast! i saw him consistently blow by defenders and create space, great hands. he dropped a deep play action pass that would have resulted in a first and goal for the offense. The pass was was a little long but Apo was stretched out and showed max effort. Hoffman was consistent and obviously Heaps #1 target. McKay played oppsite Hoffman quite bit outside, I can't remember him in the slot, but I could have missed it. For me it was apparent we have some talent and with Houk coming in the fall more height and speed will just add to the depth. Also Matthews played quite a bit and to me looked more comfortable playing WR, to me his body never fit the mold of a TE.
O-Line- Other than the fact we are missing some great players due to injury, I was surprised by the size and athleticism of the O-Line. They were agressive and for the most part able to handle the D-Line. Playing under center as much as Doman is saying they will, will demand aggressive line play and communication. Vaitai is going to be good! (Sorry didn't watch as much O-Line, as I did defense and 7 on 7.)
Defensively
D-Line- Fangupo seemed to not run as much with the 1's as I anticipated, I am guessing he needs some conditioning and when he is up to speed he will be a monster. Tuiloma was great, Vea just seems too small to me when compared to the other DT's but I will pass on judging him we habe had guys his size do the job, he might be able to get it done. Manumaleuna was great and Putnam goes about his business, Rowley is a big and strong, it was sad not to see Thomas Bryson, I really hope he figures out whatever is going on and gets back, we miss his speed.
LB's- Ok Uona Kaveinga will start. To me he is the vocal leader on defense and makes play after play, the kid is a monster. He talks a lot and gets people in position. It will be interesting to see who the 4 starters will be. Ogletree to me is a steady guy who just makes plays, he and Kaveinga will be good together, Austin Jorgensen and Kevan Bills on the outside will help with the LB's rotation, and with Stout getting back next week it will be interesting how the rotation works. Also I don't know for sure but Aveni Leung-Wai looked like he may have either broken a finger or his hand, I haven't read any reports saying either way. His hand was wrapped and iced and he was taken from the praacice field in a golf cart.
DB's/ Safeties- They were on the opposite side of the field for the majoriy of practice, but what I saw during the scrimmage was impressive, the good news is we are at least 2-3 deep and I feel we are bigger and faster than we have been in a long time. Preston Hadley is physically impressive, Everett is big and fast and Buckner played out of his mind yesterday he made some big plays (interception and a couple pass deflections) It was weird to see Hague with the safeties, and we are for sure missing Jray, hopefully he is back soon. Uale was steady and consistent and I have a hard time seeing anyone beating him out.
I think that about covers it, I try really hard to be careful with my opinions during spring ball, but they all look hungry out on the field! We will be considerably better than last year, I think most believe that already. Anyways next time I go I will try to post a little bit more of what I saw.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.
Like the Walking Wounded. Three returning starters are out, and a potential 4th starter is also out. (Hansen, Reynolds, Brown and Kahaiili
Wasn't there a blog tidbit out there from yesterday indicating Walter tore a pec muscle while weight lifting? Man that has to hurt. I tell the guys to not try to lift what I lift all at once, but some don't listen.
Hamburger Helper wrote an article about Doman, and, as it turns out, doesn't really know what to expect from Doman.
Well, as spring develops, we will get a better understanding of the concepts he will emphasize. He has made it clear he wants to keep defenses guessing. He loves the passing game and he wants to be less predictable while keeping execution high.
We do know BYU quarterbacks have done a lot of work out of the shotgun formation this past decade. You will see more formations where the QB is under the center, giving the offense additional flexibility in hiding the run and pass -- less predictability. The QB can always go back to the shotgun if needed.
You will see more crossing routes by receivers and slot backs, putting pressure on linebackers and safeties to cover and make more difficult decisions.
You will see more deep passes to receivers and more passes to the backs in the flats to stretch defenses from sideline to sideline. You will see the tight end emphasized more than a year ago.
