  • I make it a point not to venture over to CB so I have no idea what this engagement thing is about. In what context are these rumors? Is he engaged because he has dated this girl for a while and wants to marry her or is he engaged because of (potential) honor code violations that could end his BYU career?

    • Ross Apo one of the top players in the country that redshirted last year:

[ame="http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/blog?name=feldman_bruce&id=6105396"]College Football - Ranking the top 10 redshirt freshmen for the 2011 season - ESPN[/ame]

      6. Ross Apo, WR, Brigham Young Cougars

The Cougars lose Luke Ashworth but return go-to receivers Cody Hoffman and McKay Jacobson. Apo, an exciting 6-foot-3, 200-pounder whose 2010 season was derailed by a finger injury, will still be able to force his way into the offense, however. The one-time Texas Longhorns commit has already developed a strong connection with young quarterback Jake Heaps.

      • I'm really stoked about Apo and just hope he can stay healthy.

Really, I'm just stoked about this team in general. I was having a lot of fun watching them by the end of the year, and this offseason already feels longer than ever even though it's really just begun.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

You're way too young to have an arsenal of Carpenters songs in your repertoire. How'd that happen?

            • Now that we know (or seem to) that Daniel Sorensen will, in fact, be moving back to Safety, I'm very interested to see how that position plays out.

With Sorensen already back and getting fit more than 6 months removed from the season, and given that coaches have always been impressed by the mental side of D-Sor's game....

I wouldn't be shocked to see him hitting the field in the vacated Rich spot next fall.

I'll just say that of the prospects I'm aware of he's the one I'm most optimistic about actually being able to take on both the physical and the mental aspects of the position.

              • How fast is he? When a guy gets moved from safety to lb'er I always kind of assume part of the reason is because he doesn't have the speed for safety.

That move was more to fill a need and not because he wasn't fast enough for safety. He was a *** safety recruit (if you buy into the star thing). I think he'll provide good depth at strong safety, with a chance of making the two deep this year.

Actually that's a distinct part of the Sorensen move to OLB - BYU needed bodies and speed at LB. He was listed as 4.55 out of high school and reports showed good-to-excellent speed in fall camp.

He got early offers from Ole Miss and BYU.

When he committed full-on to BYU (and started telling other schools that he was going to BYU in part to play with his cousin Justin) everyone else, sensibly, backed off.

How many strong safety candidates does BYU have for next year?

                      Sorenson
                      Galai
                      Sampson
                      Hague

                      How many for free safety?

Uale and perhaps Dequan Everitt? Are any of the SS candidates going to really be FS candidates, perhaps Hague?

It seems to me that there is a bit of a feeling of panic at SS. Galai was decently recruited but the developments cause me to believe that for some reason, perhaps mentally, he is not yet trusted at that position. There is legitimate cause for concern about this position, but to assuage those concerns I offer that IMO the BYU LB corps will cover a hell of a lot of sins by the SS.

I think Sorenson will be an excellent SS in time. In an ideal world he would redshirt this year, but the world might not be ideal enough for that.

Kori Gaines is supposed to be in the discussion at FS. Isn't the Comer kid (the Snow transfer, not the Springville HS kid) slated at FS also?

Kori Gaines is 5'9" and 162 lbs. I think his future is at cb. I understand he impressed fairly well as a scout team player last year and there is reason to believe he has a bright future as a field cornerback.

I think Comer is likely a safety.
