The two losses at FSU and TCU would be pinned on Nelson and Heaps would come in under low expectations for the season.

I think that Nelson will be thrown to the wolves at FSU instead of Heaps for the reasons you stated.
I agree. Clearly at least Bronco believes Heaps is not ready and he would rather bring Heaps in when the competition is weaker and the stakes are not as high. It will allow the kid to build momentum for the future.

Next week could be an absolute bloodbath. I really hope my ability to predict this club is wrong again.

Still angry about the defensive performance. They were needed to nut up for the struggling offense and they failed.

If Nelson wasn't exposed enough today, wait until next week. FSU is more athletic and they will have seen game film. The continual QB draw isn't going to fly next week.

      • I'll probably feel better tomorrow. I was hoping to be 1-1 after two weeks, but expected the win to be against Air Force and the loss to be against Washington. We don't have a threat at any position right now. I would gladly trade Tody Christensen for any receiver we have right now. That is sad. I'm hoping this was just an off day.

BYU is really young. However that is no excuse for this cluster. BYU should still be able to compete with AF in any rebuilding year.
Everyone please note the correct usage of "cluster****" here by napper. It is a misunderstood and oft misused bit of Army vulgar linguistic brilliance.

I just want to see the defense compete. I can live with the offense struggling this year, I really can. But the defense needs to compete. This was a bit of a buzzsaw game for BYU, but the defense should have been better prepared. IMO that was far more unnacceptable than the quarterback issues.

I am not convinced if Heaps played every series today the results would be much different and it would be Heaps everyone would be piling on.
If Heaps played every series, we'd be hearing about the defense. People would give Heaps a pass because he's beloved and is a true freshman.

Well, I was wrong. BYU will be lucky to win 7 games with either QB this year. One can only hope that the decision to play Nelson for the entire second half was Bronco's way of saying: "If Riley is going to be the starter and leader I think he is, it's time to test his metal."

He's been tested, it's time to start the freshman and play him full time.

Last week I said the linebackers were suspect. Today revealed they are more than just suspect, they're just not very good.

And last but not least is there a receiver who can catch a ball? This crop reminds me of the "Toby" year ... it's going to be a looooooong season.

If there is a group of pussies on this team it is the receivers, IMO. I think they are pouting that Heaps is not the man. Their heads are not in the game. They are better than this.

Saying that I frequently say that whenever I hear about BYU's receiving corps I am usually skeptical.

This was a complete team loss. Special Teams sucked too.

For today, but eventually everyone would start clamoring for Nelson because he is the guy who guys wanna go to war with. He is a foxhole buddy type, ya know!

Pulling him after one interception and making him watch another QB that is completely inept for an entire half can't be great for his confidence either.

I'm sure Nelson is a good kid and hard competitor, but he's just not good enough. Let's take our lumps and let Heaps start, even if we lose a few more games. Bring Riley in for 7 or 8 plays a game or have him play tailback. I'll still watch the games, but I don't want to invest the extra time to go to the stadium to watch us run qb draws all day.

The only thing that makes me feel any better is that AFA gets a win on September 11th.
What are you talking about Tooblue told all of us that we win 9 games with Nelson as the qb, and only 7 with Heaps.

I think they will win 8 regular season games. I think they will bounce back defensively and the offense will plod along. I agree with you that Mendenhall is giving Nelson his shot so that there is no doubt when he turns it over to Heaps.

                            • Occam's razor, guys. Odds are the coaches know better than you all whom to play. Heaps is a true freshman; even among the hotshots most don't ever set the world on fire. Face it. Both your quarterbacks are terrible.

But I thought you just said none of the receivers want to go to war with him! (and I think you're right, btw)
