In any case, I've had lots of talks with them about sports. First off, the church leadership is pretty hands off right now with the direction BYUtv is going. Trust me, if leadership was as into pushing the channel as much as everybody keeps acting then "Church Correlation" would be involved with programing and half the new shows would immediately be canned. (I get why those guys exist, but can't stand having them around when we work).
I had a beef with the fact they wouldn't show BYU Rugby, and the answer was pretty easy for the exec. Rugby is not an official D1 sport and therefore doesn't help pay the bills when it comes to costs of broadcasting, where the sports department pays up for all other D1's. But if they found a way for costs to be covered with sponsors and such then of course they'd consider it.
I really think BYUtv has always been fine with 3rd tier rights or whatever. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if they welcomed a cutback on sports. They like the money that comes with it, but don't depend entirely on it. The channel is changing to more of a Cable Network that broadcasts within LDS standards and ideals, but doesn't preach "Mormon, Mormon, Mormon... scripture study". Which I like, considering what I do in producing different things for the channel as a free-lancer.
Sorry about the long response, I just had to pipe in with people talking about BYUtv like its the brethren's new shiny toy. The truck is awesome, and for the right price... anybody can use it, including the sports department when it makes sense. They see the positives of BYUtv, but I really don't see it being the total sticking point to some problems (aka Conference discussions), like it's made out to be. I think it's an easy excuse by others, that don't want to say what they really think (like Sunday play).
