I had not heard that argument before. Are you saying that there are fans outside of the USA following BYU and adding value somehow? How does that work?Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI think the former, not that latter. I doubt the B12 cares that BYU can remain Indy. The ability to join immediately is probably very important.
Another bit of leverage is BYUs current annual salary, which is no longer a MWC paycheck.
The global fan base certainly helps. The current on field performance is likely not a leverage point.

Uh, yes. Brazil. Lots of BYU grads here in SP/Rio/Curitiba and the mgmt society is very active.Originally posted by UtahDan View PostI had not heard that argument before. Are you saying that there are fans outside of the USA following BYU and adding value somehow? How does that work?
I think a whole 20 of them watch. Sheesh

I'm with you. Utah hit a grand slam by getting into the Pac 12. There is no other intelligent way to look at it. There is no minimizing it.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostI doubt that our agreement was influenced by CU's financial circumstances at all.
We are buying equity in the Pac-10, equity that the existing schools have built and earned through the decades, and frankly should not give away for free. We bring value to the Pac-12 but it is outweighed by the value that the Pac-12 gives to us.
I, for one, do not see the graduated pay rate as a big deal. Licensing and retail sales will increase, ticket prices will increase(rightly so), generating more revenue than we currently get in the MWC.
As far as USF, Louisville, and Cincy joining the Big East, I doubt that they had a graduated payout simply because they joined as a response to the ACC taking Miami, Va Tech and BC. The Big East lacked the position to be picky simply because they needed those schools to join to stay at 8 members(which is required to remain a conference). TCU was picked to raise their BCS scores high enough to retain their autobid when that is determined again(2013? I think). TCU would probably not agree to the staggered payout that Utah did simply because all of that extra money is going to be eaten alive by the travel costs that they are going to incur in that conference.
Finally, all of those teams joined the Big East simply to play in an autobid league. Joining the Pac-10 has many more pluses than simply access to the BCS system.
An interesting aside on the Big East, I heard one of the coaches from that conference on the radio in the last week or two (I think local, but could have been national) say that even with 11 teams making the dance last year that the conference's income from that was dwarfed by what a conference with two teams in BCS bowls receive by virtue of that. Football is king.

"Nebraska won’t receive a full share of Big Ten revenue immediately. Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Delany declined to say in what year Nebraska would receive a full revenue share, which amounted to about $20 million per Big Ten school last year."Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI'm unaware of any such arrangement for TCU, East Carolina, or Southern Florida...all of which have been bumped from mid major to BCS in the past few seasons. The Utah deal is the only one of its kind of which I am aware. So yes, I do think it is a little unreasonable.

Top 5 Words and Phrases I was not expecting to read in this thread:Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostUte fans have already apparently made huge financial concessions to facilitate the entry into the PAC12 by Colorado, a school with which Utah has had essentially the same historical relationship as it has had with, say, Babson College. Surely they would be far more inclined to facilitate the entry into the Big12 by BYU, with whom they've enjoyed a rich and loving relationship for over a century.

Anyone that is worried about BYU rejecting an offer needs to remember two things.- The Big 12 would mean a lot more money.
- BYU and the church loves money.

So I guess it is fair to say that full shares out of the gate are the rare exception. Only select schools are equal partners from the start.
I wonder what will happen to BYU..........Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I think it is likely more a function of the expanding conference's circumstances and a needs for expansion than the schools joining the expanding conference.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostInteresting.
