so once the Big 12 makes that 6 year rights agreement official, you believe that we will hear a BYU announcement? I hope so!

Another bit of leverage is BYUs current annual salary, which is no longer a MWC paycheck.

The global fan base certainly helps. The current on field performance is likely not a leverage point.
I had not heard that argument before. Are you saying that there are fans outside of the USA following BYU and adding value somehow? How does that work?

Uh, yes. Brazil. Lots of BYU grads here in SP/Rio/Curitiba and the mgmt society is very active.

I think a whole 20 of them watch. Sheesh

We are buying equity in the Pac-10, equity that the existing schools have built and earned through the decades, and frankly should not give away for free. We bring value to the Pac-12 but it is outweighed by the value that the Pac-12 gives to us.

I, for one, do not see the graduated pay rate as a big deal. Licensing and retail sales will increase, ticket prices will increase(rightly so), generating more revenue than we currently get in the MWC.

As far as USF, Louisville, and Cincy joining the Big East, I doubt that they had a graduated payout simply because they joined as a response to the ACC taking Miami, Va Tech and BC. The Big East lacked the position to be picky simply because they needed those schools to join to stay at 8 members(which is required to remain a conference). TCU was picked to raise their BCS scores high enough to retain their autobid when that is determined again(2013? I think). TCU would probably not agree to the staggered payout that Utah did simply because all of that extra money is going to be eaten alive by the travel costs that they are going to incur in that conference.

Finally, all of those teams joined the Big East simply to play in an autobid league. Joining the Pac-10 has many more pluses than simply access to the BCS system.
I'm with you. Utah hit a grand slam by getting into the Pac 12. There is no other intelligent way to look at it. There is no minimizing it.

An interesting aside on the Big East, I heard one of the coaches from that conference on the radio in the last week or two (I think local, but could have been national) say that even with 11 teams making the dance last year that the conference's income from that was dwarfed by what a conference with two teams in BCS bowls receive by virtue of that. Football is king.

Surely they would be far more inclined to facilitate the entry into the Big12 by BYU, with whom they've enjoyed a rich and loving relationship for over a century.

                      1. The Big 12 would mean a lot more money.
                      2. BYU and the church loves money.

There really isn't much left other than a couple nice-to-haves after that.

                          Interesting.

So I guess it is fair to say that full shares out of the gate are the rare exception. Only select schools are equal partners from the start.

I wonder what will happen to BYU..........

I think it is likely more a function of the expanding conference's circumstances and a needs for expansion than the schools joining the expanding conference.
