True. Of course, a constant replay of the 1984 season doesn't count.

What an odd thing to post. Is this a strange admittance that the Utah footprint is somehow smaller than BYU's?

      • Stewart Mandel tweeted that a Big 12 AD told the NY Times that Texas is on the cusp of committing to the Big 12. He also tweeted earlier that Texas is "committing to a 10 member Big 12."

WTF? I'm convinced that no one really knows what's going on.

What I really don't understand is why wouldn't the Big 12 add BYU and some other MWC team? They can't pull anyone out of the Big 10 or SEC.

With the threat of losing the Big 12 and Pac 10 money, is ESPN willing to renegotiate the crappy deal the Big 12 signed?
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I'm not disputing that. Utah will be in a much better position as a result of this. But from the PAC-10s perspective, how much more is it? Did they really score a home-run with the addition of Utah and Colorado? They get their conference championship game, what else? If the Big-12 survives I can't imagine a combined PAC-12/Big-12 TV network is still in play.

Not really. Any Ute fan understands that BYU has more fans. I would guess that the majority of BYU fans that don't live in Utah are like my Dad who is a BYU fan only because of church affiliation.

That admission is oly part of why it's odd. As a member of the PAC what does BYU's fanbase have to do with it? Schadenfreude I guess.

Probably so, but I don't know. After the last two weeks I don't even know if I am coming or going.

In my experience BYU fans that don't live in Utah are BYU fans because they went to the school. Most Mormons that live outside the Mormon belt care only for their local school or alma-mater and don't really think much about BYU. There are very few members in my ward that are BYU fans just because they are Mormon.

                          • Which is the truth if the Big XII doesn't completely crumble:

                            1) There were too many moving parts and the machine failed as a result. Basically this theory is that it is very tough to do large multi-sided negotiations and having them be successful is rare therefore inertia makes small conference moves more likely than large mergers. Even in the early 90s mergers, the death of the SWC was the catalyst that caused the merger with the Big 8. All other conference moves were small.

                            2) The Texas schools were making a power play to force more money out of the Big XII contracts and now that more money is on the table, the pressure to leave will die. Those schools who did leave either left because they have always wanted to or left because they are more name than substance at this point and wanted to go to a conference that is all name and no real substance (you figure out which is which).

                            3) These big deals were going to happen but everyone noticed that the MWC was going to be the largest beneficiary of all of this and therefore the Big XII Pac-1x merger was tanked to keep the MWC and its schools out.

                            • I can't wait for the official announcement that Texas has decided to remain in the Big 12 and then everyone else follows suit. It would just show how Texas has used the Pac 10 and all of the left coast sissies as pawns in this whole thing to structure a tv deal, which is ultimately what Texas really wanted. Once again Texas shows everyone else how to do business. Hopefully the brilliant minds at Stanford Business School are taking note.

Meanwhile the PAC 10 ends up with Colordao and Kansas/Utah which dilutes their current tv market and they end up worse off than before.

The only clear winners in this thing are Texas and maybe Utah if they end up getting an invite.
