The PAC 10 expansion groundswell

I have a sinking feeling in the pit of my gut. I'm starting to think my initial prediction of Utah going to a PAC 12 isn't going to happen. With it looking like the Big 12 will stay together with ten I fear the PAC 10 will bide their time and hold at eleven?

Kansas' football program is in a larger market than Utah's and their average attendance is higher. Kansas has a BCS bowl win and is currently performing pretty well in the Big 12 north. If it were me, I'd take the bigger tv market, the higher average football attendance, and the better (top tier) basketball program. But that's just me and I'm pretty sure I'm biased but still the facts stack up in Kansas' favor.

I think the larger market is a good argument. Higher attendance is also a relevant factor. I don't know what the real numbers are but Utah's attendance is never impressive.

As far as BCS bowl wins, Utah has more and their last is more recent. Utah is performing well in the MWC which has been comparable or better than the Big XII North in recent years.

I also think the Pac-10 has always liked focusing on cultural and scholastic similarities. Utah is probably more culturally and scholastically similar to the Pac-10. Also, Utah both recruits and plays more Pac schools at this point so they are better known to the voting institutions.

Kansas is definitely better from a hoops perspective but that is a two edged sword.

Add in the distance for travel and I think Utah is probably the better addition for the Pac-10. So much so that I'm surprised Kansas is being talked about at all. Now, that equation changes drastically if we are considering 4 Big XII south schools going to the Pac-10. In that case, Kansas gets the nod and Utah is left out. If it is just Colorado joining the Pac, Utah is my bet to accompany them.

We may finally be moving on to the Kansas vs. Utah debate.

Well, I guess we'll see. I wonder when Chris will decide to stop torturing those 11 schools who are on the edge of their seats drooling over the the unique mix of academic power, BCS-dominating football, and Kansas-like basketball prowess that is Utah, and just accept the invite already.

Utah is in and here's why.

Perfect timing; perfect location; good enough resume. They're all alone in the Great Basin among the contenders, they make a great twosome with Colorado, their all around sports are kind of miraculous (for the past six years at least), and academically they are right where they need to be, by any measure (U.S. News, research, whatever), right there with Oregon, Washington State, Kansas, Oklahoma, and better than Oregon State, Kansas State and Oklahoma State by far.
