  • As a fan of the Big12, the list of defections is gut wrenching. Before conference realignment began, if I would have ranked the schools in the Big12 in order of past achievement and potential it would have been as follows:
Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Missouri, Colorado, Kansas St., Oklahoma St., Texas Tech, Iowa St., Baylor, and Kansas. So the top half of the Big 12 is gone, yet the Big12 survives.

The PAC-12 just lost arguably their top two programs. And there is debate about expanding and adding San Diego St.??? in addition to adding SDSU immediately, Kliavkoff should be in conversations with BYU about getting out of the Cougars deal with the Big12 and join the PAC-12 instead (TCU managed something similar when it joined the Big12).

This Ute fan thinks that UCLA didn’t even run the numbers to figure out if moving to the B1G would work financially. I get that he’s still not accepting utahs fate in the PAC12 but it’s hilarious to think that UCLA made such a large decision without having anyone consider the financial ramifications of it.

It seems that some Ute fans are still wishing for UCLA to kill this thing (or have the state of California kill it for them) so they can preserve the PAC12.
Fortunately for UCLA they got a $68m settlement with Under Armour so their debt pressure shouldn't be too bad anymore. I wonder if he factored that in.

Yeah that’s not going to happen.

Even if the Pac-12 is able to keep it together with duct tape, what incentive would BYU have at all? The Pac-12 fans still shit all over BYU. The presidents feel the same way SU does about BYU academically. It's not as stable as the Big-XII. Culturally, BYU fits much better in the Big-XII. And the Big-XII is a much better conference competitively.

Yeah, there is a far better chance of Nebraska coming back to the Big 12 than that happening, IMHO.

Probably correct between the PAC-12 not inviting BYU besides it being in their best interests to do so and the poor optics of BYU not honoring their commitment to the Big12. But suppose if the PAC-12 faced its new reality and invited BYU and the Big12 was OK with that - which conference would be better for BYU? The PAC-12 or Big12?

If Kiavkoff wanted to do something tangible for his conference, what better way than to "poach" BYU before it even joined the Big12? From a PAC-12 standpoint, is there a better program in the Big12 to poach?

But Kiavkoff will probably take the Big12 approach. Do nothing until it's too late.

I think the PAC-12 presidents object to BYU on cultural ground more so than academic ones. From an academic standpoint, BYU would be in the top half of the PAC-12 even counting USC and UCLA - after the California schools and Washington, the PAC-12 is very average academically. I also question whether the Big12 is the better conference with regards to competition. The Big12 has been thoroughly gutted of name programs. So BYU will have to deal with unruly fans and looked down upon by its peers because it's a religious school?! Shouldn't BYU have thick enough skin by now?

Also, given the footprint of where BYU students come from, the PAC-12 is by far the best match.

Yeah it isn't the cost of travel, but travel will be be a big PITA for non-football sports and will put them in a bit of a competitive disadvantage when compared to the heart of the conference. I guess its better than having your sport cut though.

UCLA and SC are in for a shock when they are scheduled a 11 am game in November on the road against Indiana.

The P12 is a dead man walking. BYU would have to be insane to join up. Not a chance.

I feel bad for Kliavkoff. Poor guy inherited a mess.

You clearly are ignorant of the WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS.

The P12 enjoyed the benefits of scheduling BYU. They treated BYU like the girl you like to date but would never marry. They deserve some bad karma.

I would take an 11am game in Bloomington over an 8pm kick off in Pullman.

You don’t think they considered this when going in to the B1G? You really think the B1G is going to use UCLA/USC games for 11am programming? The B1G got these schools so they could be in the PT zone so they could have prime time kickoffs, especially in the late season. It’s going to be penn state and Ohio state that will be playing late at night when they travel to sunny LA in early November. No one is sending USC to okay Rutgers at 11am ET.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Yes and No. You are correct the #1 reason for the LA schools was to have later game times available. However, the BIG will need to pretend to appease the east coast schools. Thus they will occasionally make SC, or more likely Fucla play the cellar dwellers on the road early.

                                As usual, one track mind.

The Pac 12 could step in and pick off Kansas and Baylor or whomever today.

On the other hand, it's clear the Big 12 would love to have at least 8 of the Pac 12 and they've been told get thee hence.

BYU would never be invited to the Pac 12 so your ultimate point is superfluous.
