The Pac 12 could step in and pick off Kansas and Baylor or whomever today.

On the other hand, it's clear the Big 12 would love to have at least 8 of the Pac 12 and they've been told get thee hence.

Just because institutions do something doesn't mean it's smart. Look how our country handled Afghanistan. The odds are strong this will be debacle. The geographic challenges are not about travel expenses, but they will affect the bottom line in a material way.

LOL this is awesome. Hey Kansas, the only thing you are good at is Basketball and in fact you are one of the premier basketball schools in the country. Would you like to leave the #1 basketball conference (and it isn't close) for the #8 conference (in a good year) for less money?

No way in hell anyone from a current Power 5 league will touch the Pac 10 without Oregon and Washington signing a long term GOR. And that doesn't appear to be on the table soooo...

The Pac probably wouldn't take Baylor for much the same reason as it wouldn't offer BYU. Kansas probably wouldn't add anything to the bottom line.

Oh I have said several times across multiple threads I'm not sold that superconferences are an inevitability. I think it's just as likely they collapse under their own weight as they succeed. But that won't be sorted out before the Pac 10 is picked apart. Who would have thought when the forward thinking Pac 10 started this circus in 2010, that they would end up being the first major conference casualty of the expansion era? (I'm not counting the Big East because they weren't a traditional football conference).

Shock. Fear. Denial. Same things the Big 12 did as they stayed at 10 for more money and almost got picked apart into oblivion. Oregon and Washington are the Texas/Oklahoma in this scenario. Maybe the Utahs and Arizonas of the world are (somewhat correctly) banking on the fact that Oregon and Washington just aren't as attractive as Texas/Oklahoma.

The Pac 12 is no more a casualty than the Big 12 at this point. But there's a possibility it will opt out of the "superconference" pie in the sky. Who cares about minor leagues. I can't tell you how the Aqua Sox are doing, nor who won the college world series. The only thing that's clear is that the networks only care about near term profits and financially this hasn't really been working out for anyone.

No. It's cultural, stupid. The Pac 12 is in the position it's in because football isn't the highest priority. And that's why going to the Big 12 doesn't get off the blocks.

Nobody is saying, gee, we want to make sure college football is here for our grandchildren to always enjoy. Everyone is like the investment and mortgage bankers before 2009. Least of all the presidents, regents and high profile faculty care.

You don’t think they considered this when going in to the B1G? You really think the B1G is going to use UCLA/USC games for 11am programming? The B1G got these schools so they could be in the PT zone so they could have prime time kickoffs, especially in the late season. It’s going to be penn state and Ohio state that will be playing late at night when they travel to sunny LA in early November. No one is sending USC to okay Rutgers at 11am ET.

The point being these schools don’t care about the short term growing pains because the financial upside and being inside the super league conferences is the ultimate goal.

You can’t schedule every marquis game for November in California, it doesn’t work that way. Ohio State and PSU will probably be in the other half of the conference and might only play SC every 3-4 years depending on how they schedule. If they follow what the SEC was doing, 6-1-1 or whatever it was. They may lock in one of OSU/PSU/Michigan annually but I doubt that happens especially with a conference championship game.

With 16 have they announced how they’ll schedule? I assume 7-2

I don't think there's an argument that Washington, Stanford and Oregon are a better backbone than the programs in the Big 12. The situation however is untenable with the threat of those programs being picked off by the Big 10. The rest of the Pac 10 are at the level of most of the Big 12, but at that point there would only be 6-7 teams left with the California teams gone, with the possible exception of Cal. If the rumors are true regarding Washington, Oregon and the Bay Area schools wanting unequal revenue sharing, then the conference is in serious trouble.

The Big 12 finds itself in the unusual position of stability precisely because it's unlikely any of the programs will be picked off by the SEC or Big 10. They're all exactly where they belong.

If (BIG IF), Washington, Oregon and Stanford were to find out that there is zero chance they're getting into the Big 10, the best option of course is to grab Oklahoma State, BYU, Kansas and Baylor and gut the Big 12. But the shitheads in that conference will never allow that to happen, they'd rather turn into the Big East after Miami and Va Tech joined the ACC in 2004.
