It isn't intrigue. It is simply tradition. The AZ schools are viewed as the stepchildren. I can't explain why, that is just how it goes. One reason may be the AZ is the only PAC school to have never played in a Rose Bowl...that really hurts their credibility. BUt it wouldn't even be a point of debate if the California schools had to choose between the PacNorWest schools or the Arizona schools. The Oregon schools are founding members of the PAC and have always been viewed that way. Don't rely so heavily on google.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostWhat about the old Pac-8 is so intriguing? Why do the Cali Schools love the NW schools more than Arizona schools? Among other things, it's the coastal nature of the group - California with 4 schools and Oregon and Washington with 2 each. In 1978 ASU and UA were seen as interlopers by many back in the day. Kind of odd, because the Oregon schools had only joined 14 years earlier, IIRC, in 1964, and I don't think it was even called the PAC-8 until 1968. Before then it was the AAUW or something along those lines.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostWhat about the old Pac-8 is so intriguing? I think (DDD can correct me) that the PAC-8 nostalgia is pretty much limited to old-timers who still remember that era, which would exclude most people born after about 1970. So I am not sure how realistic it is to worry about the old PAC-8 taking off by itself. Besides, why would they want to give up the Utah TV market?

Guys, knock it off and stop pretending to know the exact dates that Oregon and OSU joined the PAC or what years the PAC changed its name.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostAmong other things, it's the coastal nature of the group - California with 4 schools and Oregon and Washington with 2 each. Oregon and OSU are considered founding members and have always been considered founding members. They consider themselves charter members. LA Ute is correct in that the AZ schools enjoy Least Favored Nation status within the conference, for whatever the reason. Again, I do think the Zoo never playing in a Rose Bowl plays a part in that. Even Wazzou enjoyed some relatively recent prominence when Leaf was there.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I was right about the dates but got the pre-1968 name of the conference wrong. It was the Athletic Association of Western Universities. PAC-whatever sounds much better.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Interesting tidbits.Expansion never made its way west as the Pac-12 decided its current format best serves the conference.
"It wasn't nearly s close as the media painted it out to be," Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott told KJR 950 AM. have to admit, its been entertaining watching Y Fans cringe and grip with every tweet and news article coming out of Big 12 Territory.
Not saying, I'd be any different (if Utah were on the outside looking in), but it's fun to witness from the safety of Utah's PAC-12 porch.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Review this thread. When the tide turned, it was me who provided reports giving Utah Fans hope again. I was kind of like a John the Baptist to you all.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostFrankly, you were horrible. With each passing day I forgive you a little more. But only a little.
