  • 9. Utah Jazz (via Minnesota Timberwolves): PG Trey Burke, Michigan

    UPDATE: The Timberwolves traded this pick to the Utah Jazz for the Nos. 14 and 21 picks, USA TODAY Sports' Sam Amick reports. Burke is the best playmaker in this draft, but his size made teams hedge. He's a great fit for a team that desperately needed to improve at point guard and has a stable frontcourt. Is he worth two first-round picks? In a draft like this one, he may be. Burke could have gone in the top five without any fuss. Here, he'll get a lower starting salary and a chance to start. Grade: A

    27. Utah Jazz (via Denver Nuggets): C Rudy Gobert, France

    UPDATE: The Jazz acquired this pick for the No. 46 pick, Erick Green, and cash. That's a steal. The biggest player in the draft also is one of the most raw. Gobert has a record-breaking 7-9 wingspan and was the only barefoot 7-footer in the draft. But he's incredibly skinny and lacks developed skills. The Jazz can afford to take a flier on a project, though, because they have an excellent frontcourt already. Gobert definitely could be a steal. Or he could be forgotten. At No. 27, that's a good gamble. Grade: A (factoring in the trade)

          Ummm...you probably are an undrafted free agent.

            Crazy that a 7'2" guy with a 7'9" span has a max vert reach 7" lower than what Jeremy Evans touched this summer at P3. There were actually 7 guys in this draft that measured a higher max vert reach than Gobert. But I love the standing reach of 9'7" being planted in the paint.

                  The language from the 90's was "pure PG". Get your shit together, man.

                      I hope the Jazz can get Gobert over here for Summer League. He may be a total bust, but with that kind of size, length and decent athleticism, I'm intrigued and would love to see him this summer.

                      • Crazy draft info coming out this morning. I'd love to be in the war room to watch this process.

                        Locke said in his tip-off that when the Jazz had Olynyk in they had him work out with the guards and him shoot 100 3's. Olynyk said he hadn't taken more than five 3's at any workout before that. He made 63 of them, the most of any prospect the Jazz worked out this year. They loved him and he was their plan at 14. They thought he'd fall there and they'd get one of the guys they liked the most in the draft without having to move up. They viewed him as a great fit next to Kanter and Favors, a stretch 4 with a great shot who was big enough to be okay on defense. But then as the draft got going, KOC heard from a source that Boston was hot for Olynyk and was going to make a deal with someone ahead of Utah to get him. Then the front office heard about the Philly deal before it was announced, and instead of Philly being a team that didn't need a PG, they were going to be in the market for one. So they knew none of the PGs they liked nor Olynyk were going to fall to 14 and they'd have to move up.

                        So they moved up and ended up with the PG that was #1 on their board. I guess that means they liked Burke more than Olynyk, or they would've asked Minnesota to take Olynyk there. If they had picked Olynyk at 14 as they had originally planned, I wonder who their target at 21 was. But since they went PG first, they started watching bigs in the back half of the first. When Gobert started falling they went to Miller and said they needed to jump in and buy him, because he was much higher on their board than where he was going to be picked. I wish they could give more info on why it worked out to get in with Denver at 27 and not earlier. It'd also be interesting to hear where KOC got news about the Phil/NO deal and Bos interest in Olynyk.

                          Thanks for sharing that. You have to love Lindsay's aggressive approach to the draft.

                          (edit) also this confirms the gut feeling I got and posted on CS, that the Jazz would take Olynyk at 14.

                          • One other thing I love about how this draft worked out. I'm always a big fan of the raw/unproven/young freaks of nature in either athleticism or size or both, that tend to pop up around draft time (see, Sene, Saer). The Jazz never take that guy or make moves to get them. As long as you don't have to use a high pick or give up much to get them, I see them as low risk/high reward types. This year, that guy was Gobert. Lindsay, in his first year in charge, made me proud. And sure enough, I see him as a high reward type, but giving up #46 and some of LHM's money, it's an incredibly low risk type acquisition.

                            <high fives Dennis Lindsay>

                              Burke's post-draft interview transcript. Seems like he recognizes what an opportunity he has in Utah. It really seems like a perfect fit, assuming they get rid of at least a few of their 6 PGs.

                                Jazz have no PGs under contract as of right now. When Burke signs his deal, he'll be the first. I won't be surprised, however, if they still end up signing a vet point to mentor him.
