You don't think they had anything of value offered? I didn't claim knowledge of a specific offer, but I've no doubt there were a few that wouldn't have required taking back bad contracts. They could have moved him. Clearly teams think he is a very valuable player. Just signed for almost 14m per year. Nobody would have given up a first round pick? A decent player with a reasonable contract? Sure they would have. Jazz wre stingy and lost him for nothing when it was known he wouldn't/shouldn't be back.

I think if they were offered anything that was more valuable to them than the cap space they would have taken it. But I doubt anything was. They didn't even seem interested in a S&T at this point because they'd rather have that space. Maybe if nothing materializes out of the space then it will be seen as a failure, but you'd still have to know what they could have had in place of that space and I just have a hard time believing it was much.Originally posted by Jacob View PostYou don't think they had anything of value offered? On the one hand, you say they want the space. On the other, you say they won't use it this year. Of course they could have dumped him over last summer or last season, or the season before without using up this years or next years space. You really don't thnk a low salary team wouldn't have taken him on for a draft pick? Probably not at the end of last year, as I've said before, that was too late. I said after last summer that they had failed, but some, here and elsewhere, insisted that the ever-so-valuable expiring contract would still bring something in return. Maybe that was the Jazz thinking, but they were obviously wrong. Or maybe thy just really wanted a dog fight for those last couple playoff spots. Either way, there can be little doubt that several teams would have taken him on a year ago. Just because you and I didn't hear verified trade offers doesn't change that. I don't know how you can believe nobody would have traded for him for a draft pick and expiring contract, at least. You don't lack so much imagination.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostI think if they were offered anything that was more valuable to them than the cap space they would have taken it. Wait, what? I think there's a good chance they'll use it this year. I just don't think it will be on free agents.Originally posted by Jacob View PostOn the one hand, you say they want the space. On the other, you say they won't use it this year.
They may still yield that -- heck they could probably use the space to grab that right now from GSW. And whether it was worth it or not won't be determined until we find out what results. Well, when we find out what results and if we knew what they were offered previously and turned down.Of course they could have dumped him over last summer or last season, or the season before without using up this years or next years space. I think that all too often teams jump on a bad deal to avoid losing a player who won't be resigned while getting nothing in return. If there is something that makes sense - then sure, do it. But if the deals being offered have you coming away even at best, I think teams are smart to stand pat and let the player go.
Either way there is risk.

ESPN Marc Stein reporting that the Jazz and Warriors have opened up discussions about a Jazz trade for Andrew Bogut. Warriors are looking to dump some salaries for a big Dwight run. If the Jazz could get a future first and Bogut out of this deal, why not?
I think it is Bogut's last year and if he is healthy, he is golden. It adds some leadership, you get a big guy who can pass the ball and work with the bigs on the team. He won't need more than 20-25 mins a game so Favors and Kanter can still develop. I would be OK with that. The Jazz have to take on roster money, so why not do it for a guy with only one year left?Last edited by UteStar; 07-05-2013, 08:19 AM.

I'd love to have Bogut on the Jazz. He'd be a great compliment to Favors and Kanter. A perfect fit, IMO. It is basically a salary dump for the Warriors to try and make room for Dwight. The rumor is that they would throw in a draft pick for the Jazz to take on the contract. Jazz have the salary cap room to take on the salary without giving up something for him.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI'd love to have Bogut on the Jazz. I agree that bringing in Bogut would be a nice fit. He isn't going to stand in the way of Favors/Kanter and he is no long term commitment. As an imbalanced trade, this is a good move for the Jazz. It will also help get to the minimum salary for next year without taking on long term contracts.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI'd love to have Bogut on the Jazz. Bogut will play maybe 30 games for the Jazz. He is a glass house and has never lived up to his potential. I think he could easily be a similar player to Roy Hibbert but injuries have derailed his career.
I read this morning LA is close to a sign and trade for Dwight. Bogut, Klay and a 1st to LA for Dwight and Ron-Ron.*Banned*

Utah has to get up to the minimum salary (well, they don't have to, but they'll end up spending that money one way or the other). So why not just take back Bogut and Jefferson? That takes the two biggest salaries from GS. So take those two for Barnes/Thompson and a 2016 pick (assuming GS pushes to save the 2014 pick to be able to move Biedrins. They can use Bogut this year and let his deal play out, and then can possibly use him as a S&T next summer, and at some point they can just buy Jefferson out to save any possible amount on his salary this year.
Bring in a few guys on minimum deals, and there you have the 2013-14 Utah Jazz, plus two new assets, including a great perimeter compliment to Hayward (I like Barnes better as a match with what Utah currently has, but think Thompson ultimately has the better career of the two).

I can't imagine that the Warriors would include either of those players. I know that they are desperate, but I think Bogut and a 1st round future would get the job done. I guess if they dump Jefferson in there as well, who knows, maybe they would have to add Thompson or Barnes. That would be beyond a no brainer but I can't see that happening.Originally posted by BGRTHNUMEGO View PostUtah has to get up to the minimum salary (well, they don't have to, but they'll end up spending that money one way or the other). They have to move Jefferson, Bogut, and Biedrins to have any hope of signing Howard outright. The easier method is the S&T directly with LA, but reports say GS is reluctant to give LA value back, and LA is reluctant to take on big salary and pay a huge tax if they aren't doing it for Howard. But no way GS is moving those 3 huge contracts w/o taking salary back by only giving one 1st round pick attached to each, because that would mean one team is taking back Biedrins' $9 M salary for a 2018 first round pick. Not going to happen. So that is why you'll see Barnes or Thompson attached to most of the rumors of the salary dumps. They have to use more resources to get it done. That's why I say it is worth taking back two salaries. Jazz need to spend that money any way, and it gets them two valuable assets for doing it, including one player that is somewhat of a known entity instead of just a pick.Originally posted by UteStar View PostI can't imagine that the Warriors would include either of those players. If the Jazz can get that kind of offer, I would jump all over it. Having Thompson out there to spread the offense along with a pick...do it if it is there. I also really would like having Bogut be around the big guys. He is a good guy, he understands the game and hopefully his passing rubs off a bit on Kanter and Favors. If the Jazz could pull this off, the future would look even brighter than ever.
