Kanter with 19 points, 5 rebs, 3 blks and 1 assist in 23 mins against Poland today.

Tomic 26 pts, 8 rebs, 4 assist in 35 mins against Croatia today.

Looking at those lines side by side, Tomic at first glance looks to have had the better day. Then you look at the minutes played, and Kanter really stands out. Kanter scores .82 points for every minute he plays, and grabs a board every 4.6 minutes. Tomic scored .74 points for every minute he plays and grabs a board every 4.4 minutes.

I doubt Tomic ever comes over. But I'm intrigued by Kanter. He could be a good rotation player.

Where are you pulling your #'s? FIBA's site? ESPN had the points the same but the other numbers much differently.

If accurate, the 9-10 from the FT line for Kanter was nice. He looks to be a guy that will earn a lot of trips to the line so being consistent shooting FTs would be a huge help.

Edit: I guess the #'s weren't different. I was looking at other games. Tomic's latest against Bosnia he had 23 and 3 in 26 minutes, but again hardly missed from the field (10-14 FGs after going 12-16 against Montenegro to score his 26)

CROATIA 87, MONTENEGRO 81

- 7-2 Ante Tomic (Jazz own rights) led Croatia with 26 pts (12-of-16), 8 rebs, & 4 assts in 35 minutes. It was nice to see Tomic get more than his normal 20 minutes per game on Saturday. Tomic has been very efficient through three games: 16.7 ppg on 71%, 7.7 rpg & 3 apg in 25 mins/game. Tomic is 2nd in FG pct. behind Pau Gasol.

Tomic showcased his full arsenal of offensive skills today: feathery touch, great passing skills, soft hands, good ball skills and impeccable footwork. Tomic scored the majority of his buckets as the roll man. Hit multiple short jumpers as the popper, including two sweet bankers. Also finished off multiple rolls usually going with his patented hybrid floater/lay-in. Dropped a pretty bounce pass from the high post to backdoor-cutting Dontaye "Mad Man" Draper.

Ante can do all the things that Pau Gasol can do. He's just not as wide or strong as Pau--narrow frame with a weak base. Can be easily shoved off his spots on both ends of the floor. Does not enjoy contact and will disappear for long stretches.

Pau is more of a defensive presence as well. For guy who is 7-2 with good mobility, Tomic's play on the defensive end is disappointing. You understand why he guards post-ups poorly but no real excuse for why he can't be a factor as a help defender. Never been much of a shot-blocker.

Skeptical if Tomic (currently with Real Madrid) can handle the physical rigors of being a starter in the league. But his skills are so good he needs a chance to prove himself in the NBA.

I think the Jazz need to take a shot at bringing Tomic over. I think it's become pretty clear that he doesn't have the frame to be a starter in the NBA, but it seems he could still make a solid rotation guy at the 4/5. He's still just 24, and maybe they bring him over a bit later the way Scola did.

Turkey lost to Germany today, so I think that's it for them. Kanter with 11 and 3 in 19 minutes, 5-5 from the field and 1-3 from the line.

Definitely weak, but don't his arms look significantly larger than they were 1-2 years ago? (which probably says more about where he was 2 years ago than where he might end up 2 years from now)

I fear this conversation has happened in the Jazz executive room far too often:

One source worked for a team that needed shotblocking. Scouts were throwing out names, and started talking themselves into a certain player. He was long and athletic, they said. He looked like a guy who could block some shots. Meanwhile, the new executive worked his laptop.

One of the central debates of this whole field is tools vs. production. Scouts traditionally predict success for players with the tools -- the strength, the size, the measurements, the workouts -- to succeed.

The stat geek position is that those measurements are fine, but much more important is a players' production on the court; How well a player actually plays ... which we are starting to be able to do in basketball.

The new guy found what he had been looking for, and read from the screen to the room. The player they were talking about was in the bottom half of the league in terms of blocked shots per minute.

Half the league was better! Who cares about his standing reach, his big muscles, or how high he jumps. It's just incredibly unlikely that guy could solve the team's shotblocking problem.

The room wanted to hear none of it. Blocked shots per minute? Just repeating those words back was mocking enough. What's this dumb stat, and who cares?

And then, almost quoting the "Moneyball" script: "We've been doing this for forty years."

Jazz to hire Sidney Lowe to help turn Derrick Favors into a superstar big man, joining Scott Layden and Jeff Hornacek on the staff.

Lowe has got himself quite the resume in terms of helping coach winners. He started out with the abysmal Minnesota Wolves, then was an asst with the Cavs when they didn't get out of the first round, coached the Vancouver Grizz into oblivion, joined the Pistons staff for one year when they lost in the Finals, then on to NC State where he never made the NCAA tournament in 5 seasons and compiled a 25-55 record in the ACC.

I don't have any idea what he can offer as an asst. coach, but I'll bet it's awesome. I hear he's very "well respected" around the league. My guess he isn't Tom Thibodeau or the big man coach the team needed.
