There probably just isnt enough plasma of recovered patients to go around. There is technology to make hybrid mouse/human antibodies. That could potentially help also, but plasma from patients is available now as opposed to however long it would take to get the hybrid antibody mass produced.

It might be too early to ask this, but how long until the next pandemic? We've had AIDS, Ebola, MERS, SARS, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, and now COVID-19. Obviously this last one is very infectious, and other factors have played into it. I just wonder if in another 5 years we have another one come through, maybe even worse.

The only one that made it to full-blown pandemic status is this last one. We are learning more on how to deal with these diseases as they arise, and can identify certain choices that were blown that could have kept this one from developing into a pandemic.

This is not the last time a disease like this will surface. But there is good reason to think we will be better able to handle them.

I agree that social distancing, flattening the curve is an emotion decision more perhaps than a rational one.

If humans were robots I think the best approach would be government-enforced home quarantine with 100% isolation of everybody over 55 or so until a vaccine is available. The rest of us could go about our lives and the economy wouldn’t be cratering like this.

The way we are doing this is a very human reaction: we are emotional beings who believe in fair play and sacrificing for each other. I can see why SU hates it because it is illogical, irrational, unscientific, perhaps un-American.

Our neighbour is a healthcare administrator. His son is our sixteen year old's best friend. They have grown up together. We spoke to him yesterday, each of us standing at a distance on our driveways. He was enjoying a day off, after spending many days at our local hospital. He said people in their 40's represent 30 - 40% of the people currently in hospital suffering with severe symptoms due to covid-19. It is his job to know these numbers. His thoughts were sobering.

Yeah, we've all heard these stories. The problem is they're not telling us the complete health condition of these patients. Poor health is rampant in the US and Europe. We have extended life expectancy not though increased exercise and improved nutrition, so much as powerful drugs and treatments. But Lipitor or diabetes drugs don't seem to help with Covid-19. The drugs themselves may create vulnerabilities. A friend of mine has chronic ulcerative colitis and is being very careful because his medication reduces immunity. Medical conditions are super complicated, and just dishing out anecdotes about younger people who got sick enough to go to the hospital isn't too helpful. Also, how many of them smoked? Smoking and drinking heavily is the common explanation for higher death rates among mean than women.

But while people 20-44 are being hospitalized, very few are dying.

In a perfect world, better than this clampdown would be for people to be responsible for their own fate, assess the risk, and mitigate, or assume it.
