Same would go if I planted a sign bagging the principal of the school she works at. You just don't share the quiet things out loud when they have the potential to harm the public perception of a spouse.
JL answered better than I could. Yes it was clearly a joke, but a joke meant to demonstrate the point: What these justices' wives have done could be misinterpreted (assuming their explanation of events is accurate) and if I were on the court I would definitely prefer that my wife exercise better judgment and ask her to do so. But also they are separate people and to expect a justice to control their spouse completely and not accept the justice's reasonable explanation of events at face value (in fact going so far as placing a burden of proof on the justice to disprove political opponents' alternate explanation) is pretty wild. All these things can be true at same time. One of the worst things that Trump has done is convince everyone on his side and his opponents' side that all issues and events should be framed in some moral absolutist context either for or against the republic.

And even if it does show bias, calling for recusal is still a really bad idea.
That's an incomplete way of stating things. A Supreme Court justice having a flag flown in solidarity with coup de'tat perpetrators isn't unserious.

Yeah, how exactly did this contribute to conflict resolution? It's a poor excuse for his wife to do that. If a justice flew a Palestinian flag or BLM flag, I think you'd find some different voices on here being disturbed by it.

I thought it was his wife that flew the flag, not the justice. Seems like a pretty big difference since the wife is not on the SCOTUS.

            • This whole discussion reminds me of this recent tweet by McKay Coppins. This is excellent advice. For context, the now deleted tweet he is quoting said that contrary to countless takes on X in the last day or two, Tucker Carlson is not in fact launching a new show on Russian TV. That news reported first by Newsweek is complete BS.

I would say this would equally apply to the incident with the mention of a "unified reich" in the background of a video the Trump campaign shared on social media. Now everyone is losing their minds that Trump is openly embracing a Nazi future for America. Trump camp claims that they didn't make the video and some staffer retweeted it. Now, believe me, I hate Trump as much as anyone, but if you seriously believe that his campaign would intentionally put a Nazi statement in something like that, then you are really gullible and dumb. Trump is a horrible person and there is no shortage of stuff to go after - don't fall for the fake news, even if it confirms your biases. When you react like this, you just end up looking as crazy as the MAGA crowd.

Circling back to the issue at hand. If you think someone smart enough to be a supreme court justice would believe the Big Lie and would be lunatic enough to put up a flag explicitly in support of January 6, then you should step back and take a breather. That is absurd.

Should your wife be held accountable for every dumb thing you do?
No, spouses shouldn’t be accountable for what the other spouse does… But parents should be accountable for what their kids do. Speaking of parents and their kids, when is Joe Biden’s son’s gun violation and tax evasion trials coming up? I think it is soon, right?

I will concede that she should not have hung the flag upside down given that this action would reflect poorly on her spouse and on the court of which he is a member. And even then, calling for his refusal is short-sighted.

                  • if my wife hung a flag at our house that was in direct opposition to the interests of my business (e.g., advocating taxing carried interest as short term capital gains) and it was directly or indirectly discovered by anybody connected to my employer, whether or not i was the one that flew the flag, i would best case be removed from matters involving affected business affiliates and worst case terminated with no ability to ever work in the industry again (more likely). alito and thomas should recuse.

She is just exercising her right to free speech just like her libtard neighbors.., except she isn’t using vulgarity.

Hey, so when is Alito and the rest of the SCOTUS going to rule of Trump’s immunity thing anyway? I wish they would hurry up so Alito’s wife can put a big Trump sign in their front yard to piss off their dumbass neighbors some more. This is making for good entertainment.

Yes, a wife should only speak when spoken too. Alito needs to get his woman in line!

Cool... let's get all this democrat election interference out of the way so Grandpa Joe can slam Trump in the debates by talking about the 'irrectionists'!

Just for fun, I put the text of this post into an AI image generator. The attached is what it came up with.

Yeah, someone whose wife hangs that flag probably should be fired.
