  • UK army chief predicts Ukraine stalemate

The head of the UK’s army has predicted the war in Ukraine could end in what he called “a military, tactical stalemate”.

General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith also suggested the conflict should prompt a rethink of the government’s decision to cut the size of the British army.

The chief of the General Staff told the Policy Exchange think-tank that Russian forces were at “an operational pause” as they regrouped ahead of an expected offensive in eastern Ukraine.

“Whether that proves to be the decisive battle or not, we are currently measuring this campaign in days. We ought to expect to measure it in months, if not – in the scheme of things – in years,” he said.

“The most likely immediate and interim outcome is a military, tactical stalemate in the Donbas, with a Russian regime able to claim some measure of success, and that potentially acting as a potential launch point for a subsequent campaign.

"I don’t think the international community and Europe, of course, is going to be able to live comfortably with a frozen conflict in Europe.”
I'm waiting to see how this next phase goes, but I can totally see how it turns into a stalemate. I think Russia is able to slowly grind its way west from where the lines are currently drawn, but they might not gain very much territory short-term.

        • The Azov regiment started out as neo-nazis, but when it was absorbed into the Ukrainian National Guard, it lost its neo nazi leadership and much of its passion for the cause. Whatever feelings it still harbors of racial supremacy is nothing compared to the Russian army generals. Still breaks my heart that those guys are over there, completely surrounded by the RUssians, knowing that no help is coming, knowing that they are done for and will not be allowed to surrender, and still fighting until they have no food nor ammo.

          • What do Russians think about the war? This piece isn't very encouraging.

I'm currently reading Peter Pomerantzev's Nothing is True and Everything is Possible. He is a Russian living in London who worked as a television producer in Moscow for awhile. Everything, even the "reality" tv shows, shown in Russia is carefully scripted to present a false but supportive view of the Putin regime and life in Russia. It's an interesting but depressing read.

I am guessing that Putin appeals more to the older crowd than the younger crowd in Russia... It is like old times. New cold war with the USA and now he has renewed the space race:

Russia Will Restart Moon Landings, Says Putin

Russia will renew its lunar program with a new moon landing mission, President Vladimir Putin announced Tuesday.

“We need to successfully stand up to the challenges of space exploration,” Putin said during a visit to the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia’s Far Eastern Amur region. He also said that Russia would continue work on a “next-generation spaceship,” as well as nuclear space technology.

Maybe there will be a battle on the moon like that show 'For All Mankind'. Can't wait for season 3 in June.

                      Correct.

You'll also note that the US will be providing training for the switchblades in nearby neighboring NATO countries. I assume that consists of learning to snap and move across the battlefield in unison--almost as if choreographed.

Russian flagship cruiser 'hit by Ukrainian rockets'
A Russian cruiser which was famously defied by Ukrainian troops on a small island at the start of the war has been hit by Ukrainian rockets in the Black Sea, according to Ukrainian officials.

The Moskva, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, received "very serious damage", Odesa regional governor Maksym Marchenko said.

"It has been confirmed that the missile cruiser Moskva today went exactly where it was sent by our border guards on Snake Island!" he said.

On the first day of the invasion, the small garrison refused calls from the ship for it to surrender, telling the ship to "go to hell".

Earlier on Wednesday a fire was reported on the ship. Ukrainian presidential aide Oleksiy Arestovych said Russian rescuers were unable to reach the vessel.

He said the ship could have as many as 510 crew members on board.

That would be crazy awesome if true.

So I have a question. Those M113 APCs we are reportedly sending to Ukraine, how do they stack up against Russian BTRs, BMDs, and other models?
