Ukraine is scanning faces of dead Russians, then contacting the mothers

"The Ukrainians champion the use of face-scanning software from the U.S. tech firm Clearview AI as a brutal but effective way to stir up dissent inside Russia, discourage other fighters and hasten an end to a devastating war.

But some military and technology analysts worry that the strategy could backfire, inflaming anger over a shock campaign directed at mothers who may be thousands of miles from the drivers of the Kremlin’s war machine."

it may backfire from a strategic standpoint, but from a moral standpoint, it doesn't bother me. they are not the aggressors and they are desperate. anything is fair game.

That's where I struggle with it—they are facing annihilation. All's fair in love and war, but still.

        • I think initially this strategy was used because the true number of casualties of their operation was being suppressed. The calls were meant to notify family in hopes that it would create a backlash against the operation. Now that it's clear there will be no backlash, it is probably not moral to continue doing it. And it will just reinforce the lie that the Ukrainians are heartless monsters.

          • This is nuts, if true.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                Why is that surprising?

                  Surprising? No, but nuts.

It would certainly inform Russia's nuclear posture. I wonder how close they are to actually pulling the trigger?

                  • Yeah, it crosses a threshold that is very concerning and is nuts. If true, or if Russia opts for using tactical nukes, that will be escalatory and necessitate a significant response from the West. We don't want to be there, and I can't believe that Russians want to be there.

I bet they didn't think there was a threat out there. Which is not every professional, as you point out.

                            • The longer this thing goes on, the more I want to think Ukraine has a chance. Then news reports talk about Mariupol, that has held out so long, being primarily under Russian control at this point and I get feeling like Russia's eventual "win" as far as taking the large cities may be inevitable. I hope the economic sanctions and pressure stays intact and Russia continues to be punished long after if that is the case.

I don't know. There are reports that Ukranian underground resistance has been pretty fierce in some occupied cities. Might a struggle to hold things long term.
