  • speaking of Jesse Jackson, off topic but I got a kick out of him being one of the first people to fly to Vegas to pray with the Kardashians for Lamar Odom.

Also, if she is taught to never leave her phone, im sure she is probably also taught to not mess with cops. i think barely-credible rationalizations such as these make her seem less sympathetic. The debate isnt any less charged or valid without the lame group home cell phone excuse.

    • Jesse Jackson? I can't think of a time when he didn't make a situation worse by opening his mouth and commenting.

        • When I was in a middle school history class, the teacher was trying to verbally quiet the class when one of the kids started mocking her by doing his best impression of Cheech & Chong's Sister Mary Elephant. He started shouting "Class, class, shut up!" Our teacher, a rather slight woman probably in her early 50s, quickly walked over to where he was seated and cuffed him hard upside the head. Then she grabbed him by his ear, yanked him out of his seat and led him to the door. I still remember the grin on his tilted face as he was being led by his ear across the front of the class. She opened the door with her free hand and yanked his ear to throw him out of the room, telling him to go to the principal's office. Then she called the office to say the joker was on his way for disrupting the class.

At the end of the school year, I got caught by the vice-principal with water balloons I intended to sneak onto the bus. He took me to the office where the principal gave me the choice of calling my parents to tell them what I had done, informing them I had been kicked off the bus and they needed to come pick me up or getting wacked on the butt with a paddle. I briefly thought of the consequences of what would happen if I had to call home and decided the paddle was a better option. I took three fairly hard wacks from the paddle and took off, barely making the bus before it pulled out of the parking lot.

"We can either get your parents involved in this, or you can show me your ass and we'll keep it our little secret."

You should have done both. Taken the paddling and then gone home and told your parents and gotten this guy fired.

Never considered corporal punishment administered by a principal wacking my clothed backside with a paddle as erotic, but some people have kinky minds.

                  • When was the last time you critics were in a fight?

I don't know anyone who has been in a fight or tried to break one up who looks at this as an extreme use of force. She was asked to leave and refused, so she was forcing the officer to remove her. It appears that he was trying to take her by the arm, then as her resistance escalated, so did his use of force. The desk flipping over looks to be the result of him attempting to lift her, chair and all, to remove her and she fought back enough for him to lose his grip or he just decided that dumping her out of the chair was his only option. Dragging her across a tile floor was hardly physical abuse, and given the lack of any injuries, this seems to be one of those situations where the video looks a lot worse than the actual incident.

I've been in situations where I've had to confront, or restrain people and/or animals (mostly animals, and a lot of them) who were resisting aggressively, and I honestly don't know how else the guy would have handled it. I'm not a trained professional, and maybe there was a better way, but from the perspective of an untrained guy who has been in an altercation or two, it seems he was doing what he had to in order to remove her.

No young animal should be subjected to that level of force. Some animals are raised in packs and are taught that they should bite. Did you first try to contact the animal's parents?

                      • I would hope a cop would treat my kid even worse than that if he/she failed to comply with instructions.

However do situations like these really need to escalate to that level? The kid wasn't breaking any laws -- it's a free country, as they say. Why not ignore the kid and just let her sit there with her phone if she doesn't want to participate?

From what my kids tell me, it sure seems like a lot of teachers make way too big a deal about little things like food and phones and clothes. It's stupid. If a girl with a challenging home life doesn't want to put her phone away and is having a bad day, why not just ignore her and de-escalate things rather than making it a big deal? Seems like it's the teacher who is disrupting class by making such a big deal about things, no?

                          • Teachers like to impose ridiculous rules on students, no? CJ's story was a great example of a teacher producing a power struggle and confrontation for no reason.

I mean in real life outside of school (like at my job) people stay on their phones inappropriately, wear ridiculous clothes, swear, eat and drink at weird times, chew gum, etc. I don't ever try to control people's behavior in these situations -- I just ignore it and do my job. If the teacher and her lesson were more interesting the kid would have put her phone away willingly maybe, right?

Probably one of the most reasonable responses to this incident.
