Now, 24 years later, I sometimes have trouble beating that.

I didn't play on the high school team, but all my friends did. I stopped playing golf when I was 19 and went on my mission, then it was about 5 years before I golfed again. Even then, I only golfed 1-2 times a year. In 2003 I got a part time job at Copeland Sports in the golf dept after a failed attempt to become an insurance salesman and a 1 year hiatus as a stay at home dad. During this time I golfed 2-3 times a week (free and free lessons) and that's when I started posting my best scores (usually low-mid 80's. My best 9 is a 41 and my best 18 is somewhere in the low 80's maybe 83 or 84, never had a hole in one, but I saw one once.

Golf frustrates me to no end, but I could never give it up.
Have you ever taken lessons. That is not meant in a bad way. I honestly want to see you reporting here you shoot in the 80's consistently. I want to hear it before I kick the bucket.

Tough thing about lessons is a good teacher changes a lot of things and you go downhill before getting better. About 10 years ago when I was a 7 handicap, I went for lessons because I wanted to hit the ball farther. He said he could get me down to about a 2, but I would go up first. Sure enough, he was right. I didn't have the patience to stick with it and quit after 4 lessons.

Yep, just finished a series of four lessons. I am posting higher scores since then. I do however feel I am hitting better shots, just haven't put it all together yet. It will happen.

My dad played golf at USC. I have golfed with him twice. He has always physically acted older than his age. So when I started getting into it, he wanted nothing to do with it.

I started golfing at 18 with DT. It wasn't pretty. Between 115-130 range.

About 6 years ago I started playing more frequently. A few times a year.

Last year DT complained that all I was doing with my free time was Fly Fishing. So I decided to golf a little more. I haven't tossed a fly since Feb. 09 now.

I am in the mid 90's consistantly now. My long game isn't good and I have a problem reading greens. My putting tempo/speed is okay.

My short game from 50-75 is good. My chipping around the green is really good.

Who knows. My low round is a 90 at Wasatch Mountain. And that was finishing with a triple, par, double.

I will break 90 before the spring is over.

I watch with anticipation the DT and Tick golf saga. I just know at some point you boys will be throwing down scores in the 80's.

Note to DT. Be patient with your lessons. I agree with Junkie. 90 on the Mountain Course at Wasatch is not bad.

A 90 on the Mountain course is pretty good. That is a hard course.

I did not start golfing until I was about 18 I went out and bought some cheap Diablo K-mart clubs and I played maybe once or twice a year tops. Then about 5 years ago I decided I wanted to get better and started playing quite a bit more. But I was really struggling and would struggle to keep it under 100. I had my good days and bad. Two years ago it started to click a bit. So last year I started to keep my handicap. As soon as I signed up for the UGA I got the dreaded <redacted> and could not put a ball in the air. This lasted about 3 months it was awful. But I was faithful and kept my handicap anyways. It was a 25! I have since fixed that and my HC is down to a 15 and getting better. I need to be more consistent off the tee but my irons are solid and I am good around the green. If I could get more distance off the tee I think I could be single digits.

And that was with me teeing off with a 3 iron. I didn't hit a driver once.

I was playing out of my mind. I sunk a 35ft putt on the first hole for birdie.

I am a social golfer but enjoy reading this thread. I stink at golf but always have fun when I go. I don't enjoy golfing enough to go on a trip specifically to golf, but it is a fun thing to do during working hours.

The thing that turns me off to golf is the cost. It is just so expensive to play a round when compared to other stuff I like to do. If i could get over that, I would probably golf more.

I am not bothered by my golf suckiness, although it probably bothers others. Maybe I need to get out and hit some balls.

Utah golf is pretty cheap compared to Socal golf. Next time you are in town I will round up some corporate passes and we can go play for free. Bring Gobi along so I can teach him how to do the manly things that his father is neglecting.

I understand the cost thing. If I had a young family, I probably couldn't justify what I spend. Well, I know I couldn't. I remember my ex saying to me after I played at Pebble Beach, "how can you possibly justify spending that much money on golf." The green fees plus cart were $35.

That's either a typo or you're really old.

                          Not a typo.

It was just barely pre Carter and hyper inflation.

Back in 82 when I played Pebble Beach (44+40=84) it cost $75. I didn't care, but a normal round back then was $15.

I belong to a mens club now, and budget about $2K a year for golfing, that the wife knows about, and about $1K in cash. Now that I'm a "Senior" golfer, I've enjoyed playing in sanctioned events, and as a single digit handicapper, am eligible to play in state wide events. I can't really compete with the big boys, but they need full fields and chumps that will pay to play with them. The good thing is getting to play at exclusive country clubs that would cost 30-50K to be a member. Also, the before/after buffets are very good. The fellowship at these local majors is really kind of fun, although I admit to feeling like a fish out of water off the course because of the coarseness of a lot of the people.

Back raising the kids, and when money didn't come as easy, golf did get expensive, and had to watch when and where, but in high school the boys got on the golf team, and they got huge amounts of playing time and tourney experience for free.

I've thought about joining a "country club" but now days there are several great courses with country club turf that have annual passes for more than reasonable money. Since the church is my social club, probably will never join a country club.

I really wish that I had gotten into golf sooner and had played in HS. The kids got to play some decent courses, and like you said they got to play a lot of golf for free. I'd love to get my girls into golf when they're a bit older. Right now Gator golf will have to do.

By osmosis my 17 year old daughter has become a golfer. She grew up watching golf on TV, and even though she mostly has just hit balls in the yard, she decided to "go out" for the golf team like her brothers. Two years later she's #2 on varsity, and has a good little swing.

I took her golfing a couple of weeks ago, and even though she's not long, she gets on in 3, and 2 or 3 putts. We played with a husband and wife, and my daughter got the concept that she doesn't have to hit it like a guy to have fun.

If you're going to work with girls, make sure they have fun, and don't measure themselves against the guys.
