  • A new video of Phil's famous flop shot. This time, he hits it over a dude standing a club's length away from him. Pretty cool. I like Phil.

      • Golf Report Sept 29, 2011

        41+41=82

Played in Myrtle Creek on Thursday. 1st hole par 5, on in 2. 3 putted. On the day I three putted 8 times. Only had 1 birdie on the day, the 9th hole a par 5.

Since I haven't played a lot this year I was ambivalent about my score while playing. I was surprised how sharp my driving and approach irons were, short game needed some playing time, but my putting was as bad as ever. Shot of the day: My hybrid 7 wood with a driver shaft from 220 into a par five. Sky high shot that floated down with a parachute to 18 feet of the pin. Missed eagle, but tapped in bird.

It pains me to put golf on the back burner...

          Clack where you been buddy?

          Golf tip for today:

Put your clubhead covers back on after you hit. Otherwise your partner might make an erratic left hand turn causing your cart to slide and then dumping your clubs on the cart path when it catches and comes to an abrupt stop. Thanks to my old man my driver has two chips in it and some bad gouges and scratches. Two of my irons are dinged up on the toe.

Clack! I was just telling my FIL the other day when we were golfing that Myrtle is probably my favorite course in the state. What a fun course. Glad to see you poke your head in.

              • I broke 100 for the first time in what seems like an eternity Wednesday with a 53-44. I really needed that back 9 score and save a round. I was seriously on the verge of quitting this stupid game.

                • Had a breakthrough today. Getting ready for a tourney on Monday and was hitting everything thin (which I'm prone to do). Realized I was straightening my legs during my downswing, which was causing me to hit thin and off the toe.

                  • Clients aren't always a pain in the butt. One of my favorites took me to the Olympic Club today (he's taken me a few times in the past). In addition to the golf, he gave me a sleeve of ProV1's (he bought several dozen and had his name and the date of his recent hole-in-one imprinted on the balls) and bought me a nice lunch overlooking the 18th. At the end of the round, he promised me a couple of guest passes for Round 2 of next year's Open. Despite his kindnesses, I started our horrifically, and was 7 over after three. But I shot a 41 on the back for a 90.

                    • OK - It's March 2012 - Time to dust off the clubs and hit the range. In Portland today it was warm and sunny, and the greens at the club are plugged and sanded this week. It won't be long.

If you remember, my game is pretty good from tee to green, but my putting adds about 8 shots a round to my game that shouldn't be there. With that in mind, I'm going to research belly putters, and make a purchase this month. I'll post my thoughts on here and report back on what the final product will be. One thing for sure, is that I can tell a difference between the age of 50 and 52. I'm going to have to play a lot more golf just for the improved health benefits.

                      Here's to good health!

Hey Clackamas! How have you been? I picked up a Scotty Cameron Kombi belly putter this last year. I really like it and am getting better with it the more I use it.

                        • I started golfing in September. I felt like it was something I had to do for work. I bought some Taylormade Burner 2.0 irons and Burner Drivers and Woods. I also bought a Rossa putter. All of it was used and relatively cheap because it came from a friend. I started "playing" by trying to just go and play. That sucked and so did I. Then I started trying to build a swing in our net (we have a net in our warehouse that you can hit golf balls in) with one of our salesmen who was a PGA pro. It has finally started going well. I still suck but I truly think I am starting to get a breakthrough by focusing on the smoothness and control on the swing and not on the violence of it. Has anyone here had success in focusing only on striking the ball with the sweet spot and ignoring the clubhead speed?

Sounds like you have a decent set up for equipment - so you're good there.

Regarding the question.... My son and I were talking today about the difference between Rory and Tiger. Rory is so smooth from beginning to end, and he hits the ball because it's in the way. Now Tiger seems to dip and lash at the ball, as a striker, sacrificing control for the sake distance.

Generally speaking, you're better off hitting it at about 80% and focusing on control rather than distance. Scoring is where it's at, not hitting it far. Just ask Husky...

I went two weeks ago on a day that hit 65 here. First time out since a tournament I played in November. After going triple-triple to start I stopped keeping track on the front. Shot 47 on the back. I couldn't putt at all. I had about 3-4 birdie opportunities that turned into bogeys.
