  • I'm playing in "The King of the Hole" tournament tomorrow. It's held at the Teton Pines course up in Jackson, Wyoming. Really one of the most beautiful courses I've ever played. The pins will be in the toughest places, the tees will be all the way back, the geese will be flying, the air will be crisp and the leaves will be turning, I'm really looking forward to it.

    • I played in a 2 man scramble out at Stansbury Park "Country Club" (I use this term loosely) over the weekend. My partner and I match up well together and he is very long and accurate off the tee but struggles a bit with his wedges and short game. I have been struggling off the tee but my short game has been dialed in lately.

Partner is a 13 handicap and I am a 15. We are paired with two older gentleman that share the same handicaps.

      We started on hole 5.
Hole 5- 210 yard par 3 with a pond on the left and pond in front of the green, huge trees surrounding the rest of the green. Basically if you miss the green you are looking at bogey or worse. I tee off first and hit an average shot about pin high but I yanked it a bit and I am on the other side of the green about 40 feet away. My partner steps up and hits a ball that looks to be short, it hits the front of the green and rolls all the way back to the cup stopping inside of 2 feet. Unbelievable shot. The guys we play with miss the green and bogey the hole. We birdie.

Hole 6- 360 yard par 4. we both hit great drives down the middle and we both miss the green, we chip it within 4 feet and we both miss the putt. Terrible bogey.

Hole 7- another par 3 surrounded by water. This one plays about 175. I put my tee shot long and left as does my partner. We have about a 50 foot downhill putt that breaks at least 4 feet. We are just trying to lag it close. He putts first and drains it for birdie.

      -1 through 3 holes
At this point the guys we are playing with are getting pissed, one of them mutters a "13 handicap my ass."

Hole 8 is a long par 5 with a lot of water. I put my tee shot in the water, partner puts his in the bunker behind a tree. We have to punch out, I actually hit a nice punch shot that rolls about 170 yards. We have 100 left in to the green and both hit the green but neither one is close, we end up parring the hole.

Hole 9- 400 yard par 4. We leave ourselves about 125 in to the green and the pin is in the very back. I hit a ball dead at the pin, however it was cold and the greens were hard my ball bounces after it hits the green about 10 feet in the air and comes to a rest on the fringe 20 feet behind the hole. Partner goes in the bunker. We take my shot and I step up and some how I chip it in. Now the guys we are playing with are really pissed and have gone in to straight dickmode. They have yet to see a birdie and are playing 1 over. We are now -2 and have made some miraculous shots.

Hole 10- another par 4 I drain a long birdie putt.

Hole 11- short par 4 we ended up behind a tree with a tough pitch shot to the green, the closest we can get is about 20 feet and I drain that birdie putt. At this pont we feel good and we are rolling. -4 on the day.

Hole 12- was a tough pin and we end up with a par after two nice iron shots in to the green.

Hole 13- short par 3 playing about 145. I hit a 9 iron within 3 feet and we birdie again. -5 now.

Hole 14- toughest hole on the course, 460 yard par 4 with water everywhere. My partner hits an absolute bomb of a drive right down the middle. We drive up and only have 130 to the pin. We don't get in real tight and end up with par.

Hole 15- is another par 5 that is reachable in two. Unfortunately I yank my ball OB and my partner hits his under a tree. We have a swing under the tree but the branches mess with both of our back swings and we still have 100 to the hole. Again we hit two nice iron shots in to the green and have a 6 foot putt which we both miss. For another par on a par 5. The guys we are playing with still have not talked to us in about 6 holes.

Hole 16- is a par 3 that plays 185, my partner duffs his tee shot and I leave mine short in the bunker. I hit a nice bunker shot to within about 5 feet but we both miss the par putt and bogey the hole. The guys we were with hit the shot of the day and stick it within about 2 feet and birdie. They start making small talk all of the sudden.

Hole 17- Par 5 with houses on the left. I hit a drive right down the middle about 260 yards. My partner decides to cut the corner with his driver since I am safe, he over cooks it right in to a house and we hear a window shatter. After about a 15 minute delay getting all the info on the broken window we fall apart and bogey the par 5. Old guys birdie again. Old guys are now -2 on the day and we are -3. They start getting real chatty again like we are best friends.

Hole 18- Another long par 4 about 440 yards. Partner still rattled hits his drive OB, I put a good drive down the middle but not great, we still have 200 to the green. We take a second shot that was short and left right behind a bunker. I flop it over the bunker but we still have a 20 foot left to right putt on a tough green for par. Somehow I make it to save par. Old guys miss a 5 foot birdie putt. This gets us going again with 4 holes to play.

Hole 1- Two good drives and I hit the pin with my sand wedge from about 75 yards, almost hole it and we tap in for birdie. Old guys par and they go silent again. Won't even respond to me when I try to make small talk.

Hole 2- Water up the left and right side, tight fairway. Partner hits a bomb about 300 yards down the middle leaving us about 100 in to the green. We hit two ok shots but have a tough 15 foot down hill putt that is really fast and breaks hard right to left. My partner goes first and runs it by about 5 feet. Again I step up and some how I drain the putt to get us to -5. Old guys both went in the water off the tee and bogey. At this point we have about a 5 minute wait on the next tee and they won't even look at us.

Hole 3- another par 5, this time we play it well and birdie to get to -6. Old dudes par they are still at -2.

Hole 4- short par 4, we have about a 30 foot birdie putt that my partner nails to get us to -7 on our last hole. Old guys bogey to finish at -1. They don't shake hands, practically toss our scorecard at us and drive off.

We end up winning the net as we were given 10 strokes, for a net 55. It is funny that these guys were so mad it wasn't like we were slaying it from tee to green. We just made a lot of long putts, chipped in for birdie on one hole. It was a definite ham and egg effort. The guys behind us were dotting every flag stick. 4 balls all inside of 15 feet on every hole, we weren't doing anything like that. But man these guys were irate. One guy told the pro we were sandbaggers and we shouldn't be allowed back. My buddy plays mens league out there and we have both played with the pro before. The pro tells him he has played with both of us and our handicaps are legit.

Overall a good day and $350 in proshop money. Combine that with the $275 I already have out at Stansbury for finishing 2nd at the Stansbury Amateur and I think I will order some new irons in the spring.

Six under doesn't seem out of line for a 13 and a 15 in a two man scramble. Most 10 - 15's I know aren't that high because they can't hit the ball but are just terribly inconsistent, a scramble covers most of those inconsistencies.

        • I won my flight in our Men's Club Championship this weekend. I played well and was striking the ball better than I have in a while. Prior to my Utah trip in the beginning of September, I was playing to a 14.5 index. After Utah, I am all the way back to a 20.7. I took a break and only played 3-4 rounds in the last 2 months, but decided to play in the Championship anyways.

For the 2 rounds I shot 41/43 on the front and 55/50 on the back. The back was a real challenge for me. I carded a 12 on the 16th hole the first day, which is the easiest hole on the course. The second day I doubled the 16th despite my best efforts to match the 12 I shot the previous round. I was at a net 73 (T2) after the first day and 4 back of the leader. I ended up winning by 4 strokes. The person who was in the lead, quit after 9 holes the second day so really not sure how I would have faired had he stayed.

Anyways, $150 in script and $50 in skins winnings made for a nice weekend of golf.

FYI, the prior years champion (The Tick) did not play due to prior family commitments.

Good job DT.... 2013 was a bit of a slow golf season for a lot of us. Maybe we can bring the golf thread back to life in 2014.

That is a good deal. Anybody want to buy some PING G20's for $400?

                  • I picked up some RocketBladez Tour irons over Thanksgiving. I was able to hobble around for six holes Thanksgiving morning in Boise and I played three holes here last week and despite not being able to shift by weight yet I really like the look and feel of these irons. They look like a blade yet are much more forgiving than the old blade iron. I'm missing golf already.

                    • A few of these guys were in my ward growing up. One of them not mentioned is 69 and is the youngest of the group. He said Wahlford can still shot his age at 92.

                      • Played a New Years round with The_Tick and a couple buddies. Had a great time. Tee'd off wearing layers of cold weather gear and was in shorts and a pullover by the time we finished. Was a beautiful day! We start team play in 3 weeks. I really enjoy the competition.

                        I love year round golf!

                          • I bumped into Coach Edwards at Coral Canyon today. Posting it here because we didn't talk about football at all. It has been a great week down here and not looking forward to going back to the cold and haze. Of course it is only 50's and low 60's here in George and Mesquite, but it is pretty nice with the sun out. I even get a thought of retiring and then I realize I don't have enough money.

You just need a better financial planner.

                              • I think I'm done for the year. I played with my pals from grade school (losers that we are, we still get together) and I shot a 79 with three birds. And it was no fluke (the birdie putts included two tap-ins) as I had only 2-3 bad shots the entire round. Those of you who have played with me know that today was a Festivus miracle and I have no hope of bettering that in 2014. I'm fine finishing the year with a 79 average. Good luck to everyone in this fall's CS Tournament!
