I picked these up. Forged (3-pw) with Nippon steel shafts and Tour Velvet grips. $260 new in the box.

I've never hit them. When I was researching clubs a few years ago, I was looking for the most playable forged clubs. I narrowed it down to the most forgiving forged offerings from Titleist, Mizuno, and Bridgestone and finally chose Titleist. Srixon was a wildcard in that group, which I decided was very similar but never had a chance to hit. Japanese company with reviews that make me think their offering is similar to a Mizuno-Bridgestone type club. If that's the kind of club you're in the market for, I think you'll be very happy with them.

Yeah a guy I work with has been trying to sell me his Bridgestone J38 irons because he wants the J40s.

I figure at the price they were tough to pass up and if I don't like them I can probably trade them or sell them and get my money back and then some.

What made you lean towards forged, other than price? My understanding is you just gave away almost any forgiveness and need to be making a good swing every time on the ball now or your bad swings will be even worse. I'm no club expert though, I'm interested to hear your report.

I'm also curious to hear the answer, but I think the forgiveness sometimes is overstated.

I was playing Titleist 695 CB's, which are pretty similar to this Srixon's. I just switched to the Mizuno JPX 200 which is a cast iron and is billed as being ultra forgiving. Honestly I don't notice a huge difference. In fact I think I might like my old Titleist's better, and I'm considering switching back.

The bottom line is you have to have a good golf swing to hit a golf ball correctly. I think the forgiveness is aimed at people who can't get the ball up in the air and other than that, the benefits are marginal.

Yeah, I have no idea. Just parroting what I've heard from others.

Well if you look at the club it's got a cavity back and looks very similar to the Callaway X irons. It's technically a game improvement iron still. What I am hoping is that the irons will give me the feel I get from hitting a forged iron flush with the forgiveness of the cavity back design. We'll see.

I also spent some time reading up on them. It seems that everyone that hits them loves them. I hope to have the same experience. The Hacker's Paradise has a 52 page thread in their forum dedicated to this iron set. They have to be an upgrade over my 10 year old Titleist DCI knock offs.

They had the Z-TX forged irons for a bit more, but those are true players irons.

Hopefully Monday morning I can get out and swing them and I'll give a better review. Anything at this point will be an upgrade. But if I hate them I am sure I can at least get my money back out of them.

I love those balls too. I think I have posted about them here before.

I thought it was MX 200. I own the JPX 800's which are supposedly their replacements.

                        42+40=82

                        2 Birdies - 8 pars - 5 bogies - 2 dbogies - 1 tbogie - Men's Club no money won.

My handicap is 10. Par is 72, I shot an 82 - so life should be good. It's good... if you don't mind missing A 3 INCH PUTT! So here's the story. Par three, I hit a seven iron to 12 feet right pin high, putting for birdie. Missed high by a fraction and run it by 3 feet. Missed 3 foot par when the ball lipped out right, and was left with a 3 inch tap in. My ball/stance was in the line of another guy, so I reached over to tap the ball into the hole with a jab, and hit the ground and hit the ball and left it 1 inch short. Tapped in again... for a double. I four putted from 12 feet!

The thing is, I was playing pretty good. Snapped hooked the 10th hole for an OB and took a triple. But the 7 iron into the green was a thing of beauty.

Shot of the day was a 6 iron from 163 on 9 that landed pin high 5 feet right. It was a high draw that was aimed at the right bunker, but came back as planned, and landed perfectly. I missed the bird, but a tap in par on the No.1 handicap hole is always nice.

Belly putter continues to be very good. Can't imagine going back to my old ways of putting.

For my provisional ball on 10, I reached in and pull a out a Pro V1 by mistake, and hit it anyway and ended up playing it on the back. Twice it showed its amazing ability to stop, and it's making me rethink about playing the more expensive balls all the time.

I re gripped my 7,8,9,W with the Golf Pride Multi-Compound grips yesterday, and they feel much better in my hands than the stock PING grips. I hate paying retail for them at 9.99 a grip, but they're a much better grip.

I don't know if I love Forest Hills more than golfing, but my course is really my favorite place on earth. Been playing there for 38 years, and the place really feels like the farmers love of the land to me. I was talking to my playing partners who've also played there 30+ years, and everyone agrees that Forest Hills never gets boring because it is designed so well. It's just a fabulous place to spend half a day walking around.

                          JPX 800, that's what I meant.

                          • Tried to play 18 at Rose Park today. Tee time was at 10, and the front nine was great. However, we should have tried to start earlier, 8:00 am would have been good.

On the 10th tee, it started raining. We were prepared for rain, and got into our jackets and pants. By the 11th, it was coming down hard We could hear distant thunder, but we hoped it would stop or pass us by. On the 12th, the thunder was much closer, but we still hadn't seen any lightning, so we decided to finish this 12 and decided whether to go in. On our second shot on 12, a huge lightning bold hit the ground about a mile away, towards downtown. We picked up our balls and went in. By the time we got to the clubhouse, it was coming down in sheets, and lightning and thunder constantly. All we could think to say was "RAT FARTS!".

The great thing is we paid $25 for the round, including carts. The rainchecks they gave us were for $21, 9 holes with a cart. So we paid $4 to play 11 holes.

                            • Threw down a 38 on the front. Good start. Parred 10, then the lightning and thunder horn sounded. Never got to go back out.

Oh well, Monday is supposed to be nice.

                              • I've mentioned on here that the grips that came on my new Pings, have caused me a bit of a slippage problem. So I was on the range hitting a warm up bucket before my Saturday morning round, and the 6 iron I was hitting was moving out of the cup of my hand. It was really bugging me. So in an attempt to fix it on the range, I extended my right index finger down the grip to act as a buttress against the uncupping palm heal. The first shot I hit in that fashion was perfect without the slipping. I laughed to myself thinking this is stupid. I then hit the rest of the balls, going though the irons with my finger extended down the shaft/grip. I was hitting the ball great. I told myself I was going to do this on the course.

Well... it may sound very unusual and kind of awkward, but after 18 holes, I have to say I had my best iron round with the new irons. It not only helped keep the grip attached to my palm, it gave me a good swing thought as my extended finger was easier to gauge a correct hand position when hitting the ball and the follow through to the target. I know... I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but it seemed to work. I'm playing tomorrow in the Men's Club Memorial Day Game, and I'll see how it works as an on going project.
