  • Any "husky" golfers on the site? I used to golf a lot but gave up after taking some lessons (which destroyed my ability to hit the ball). I'm not flexible (or stable, I suppose) enough to keep my hips quiet on the backswing, and I just can't seem to generate any power. Golf used to be a joy, but it's a complete chore now. I'd like to get my girls into it, though, so we can have something to do together when they get older and "too cool" for padre.

Any tips for a chunky, inflexible golfer (other than lose weight and stretch, haha)?

I would say "play more." That will help both with the flexibility and the poor hitting, I imagine.

Get a swing trainer, and use it to increase flexibility and motion. I duct taped a hammer to a shortened old shaft and grip. It works great to keep the muscles lose and flexible in the winter.

Become accustomed to your swing restrictions and accept them, and don't try to swing harder than you should. Swing within yourself, and be comfortable with what you have to work with.

"But it's a complete chore" - I hear ya. But the fact that it's a complete chore means that it could be good for you. Recently I walked 18 holes for the first time, and it "was a complete chore." In fact my main consideration was making it back to the club house, and not my game. Now... I know I can do it, and I've lost some weight in the process. It sounds like you need to get out there and hoof it. Is there a more fun way to lose weight than golfing? I think not. I bet if you played 20 times between now and the end of July, you'd lose 20 pounds. Go for it!

        • I can't crop mine to make it all nice a pretty. I can build a PC, but I can't crop a damn photo.

I had 3 drives less than 100 yards. I couldn't keep a drive in the fairway to be honest. But my irons and my 3 Wood were sweet today.

I lipped out 3 Par putts, and ended up with 6" tap-ins.

          Getting closer.

I did have a sweet 4 hybrid from behind some trees from 190. Hooked it up and over the trees and landed the green. Missed the birdie putt, but the shot of the day for me by far.

          • Any Utah CUFfers want to play an afternoon round? I'd have to rent clubs because I stupidly didn't bring mine. It is looking like I'll be free about 2:30-3.

            • I had a decent round going until I carded an 11. Yup 11. I absolutely killed this drive taking some fairway bunkers and mounds out of play by clearing them by 50 yards. I'm left with <60 yards and I chunk my sand wedge about ten yards short into a pot bunker. Effing thing has sand that is more like clay. I ricochet my shot off the bunker wall and out about 10 yards behind me. Now I just have to hit a nice easy shot over the bunker and onto the green. So of course I chunk it right back into the effing bunker. This time I swing not once but four times to get out. My playing partners were in stitches. Finally on the green I have lost all composure and three putt. I was out of it for the next couple of holes. And that is why I shot a 105.

              • Golf Report - Saturday May 19, 2012

                41+38=79

                3 birdies - 7 pars - 6 bogey's - 2 dbogey's - 28 putts

Played in The Men's Club with mandatory putt outs, and strict play it as it lies. I'm not sure how to feel about this round. I'm happy with the end result, but I left about 4 shots out there that would be the equivalent of missing a lay up in basketball. Missed a 2 footer for a bogey resulting in a double. After a 290 yard drive in the middle of the fairway, missed the green totally from 71 yards, and flubbed a chip coming back resulting in a double. Missed a 4 footer for par. Putting for eagle from 20 feet, and 3 putted for par.

The good news is that my driving was still strong, which made it easy to capitalize on the birdies. I feel as though I'm on the verge of going really low, as my confidence is strong, and my putting has improved about 4 shots a round with the new belly putter. The light hands putting thought is really a breakthrough for me. The head just holds its line so much better.

The bottom line is - As good as I'm driving it right now, I should be scoring better.

                    • I went out this weekend and hit the ball like crap. I was somewhere in the high 40's. Yesterday I went out with a plan to work the ball on every full shot and it was fun. It made me focus on every shot and actually have a plan before I hit the ball.
